High risk for Pre-diabetes also at young age?

Hi everyone,
I was doin a medical checkup the other week, but was told that i have a high risk of getting pre diabetes. My blood sugar level was okay at the time, but isn't it really a bit early to have high risk already at my age which is 34?

Is there any other relatively young people here experiencing pre-diabetes or high risk for getting it? i was really surprised since i consider myself fairly healthy - definately not close to a chronic disease! Would be nice to hear of your experiences!

I don't know what other markers could have alerted anyone that you're at high risk of getting prediabetes if your blood sugar is normal (besides weight and family history maybe?)

I'm 20, skinny and despite having a million blood tests nothing has come up to make anyone tell me I'm at risk, despite my ethnic group, family history,****** general health, having PCOS and readings over 10mmol

But i'm just treating myself like I am anyway and perhaps you should too. DIagnosis or no diagnosis, lose wight, low carb and hope for the best? Diabetes seems to be a progressive thing and its a good idea to nip a problem like that in the bud now. Ask the doctor who told you that what you should do now. Alot of people on this forum have said even after diagnosis they didn't get much advice, so pushing for advice might help you stop a problem before it starts... knowledge is power. Good luck xxx

Hi littlewolf,

Thanks for your support! Well, i was told that one risk factor was that my body weight is higher than desired. In fact was off normal weight until i was a teen, and somewhere in the teens i started to gain a little. Later, of course the pounds added to each other. I never thought i was that fat so my risk went up. At this point however, my blood sugar readings were perfectly fine, but he said my risks had gone up due to my higher body weight.

The doc at the check also had my waistline measured and appearantly it was well above the desired range. In addition my lifestyle id pretty ****** in a health perspective i guess. i dont do too much exercise these days, but the big waistline was of major concern he said. On the other hand i am only 35 years old so i did not expect to get such a hard warning from the doc.

Just a question, is there anyone here at the forum, who has got diabetes type before the age of 40? i thought that this risk was really low....

That was a really good idea to ask for good advice from the doctor. Of course it would be better to, as you say, stop the problem before it starts! All the best!

Ah weight. Well there are lots of people on the forum trying to do something about their weight, and the low carb diet many are adopting here will help you lose weight in itself.

I wish you all the best and hope you feel better in yourself being slimmer as well as knowing you are taking action <3 xxxx

Now harass your doctor for advice! They should be there to help you take care of yourself not just chuck pills at you lol

Keep us posted on your journey ok x
