High sugars = sore throat. Treatment?

I'm prediabetic, but get symptoms when my sugars run high. One symptom I get is a sore throat. I also get a hoarse voice, which is worse in the evenings. My sugars have not been optimal for the past several weeks, and as usual have developed the sore throat. 2 questions:

1) Does anyone know why high sugars would cause sore throats? I cannot see any white (thrush) or anything in my throat, and warm drinks feel good on it.

2) Does anyone have a treatment for this (other than the obvious lowering of blood glucose, which I'm trying to make happen, but it may take a while at this rate)? I don't want to be taking paracetamol or ibuprofen all the time, but it hurts and I have to talk and make presentations for work.

Thanks!

maybe you are about to get an infection in your throat, then some strepsils sugarfree kind ..?

I guess that everybody have some weak points and that when we get weakened like f.x. from high blood glucose those points are where our illnesses will show first/or the most...
you get a sour throat, others maybe get urine infections and so on...

guess there is no way other that getting your sugars down and keep them there... or over time you are very sure to get full blown diabetes and for most then there is no way back...

don´t know how your condition is , but if you are owerweight then you could loose some og you could stop eating anything with sugar, bread and potatoes and rice and so on... consider yourself happy you´re still "only" is pre-diabetic

My view on this could be a bit different.

What you experience doesn't happen to me, but I have noted several people comment that when they have infections, such as a sort throat, a cold, earache or whatever that their bloods run high. This is their body's reaction to fighting their infection. Sometimes they have a day or so when, inexplicably, in the immediacy, their bloods go up, then the infection shows itself.

My guess (and clearly it can only be a guess) is, this is what could be happening to you.

I would suggest you treat your sore throat with plenty of fluids and analgesia, if required, and if you see any puss or extremely swollen tonsils, it could be an idea to have a word with your Doc. Your tonsils, simplistically, in the extreme, are filters for infection. Some swelling suggests they're working. Extreme swelling could suggest their struggling to cope with their work.

If you have lots of infections, again a quick chat with your Doc could be worthwhile, just to ensure you're just on an unlucky run. I'm fortunate to have a pretty effective immune system, but if I feel I'm picking up too many bugs, I might take a 2 week course of Echinacea. Whether it actually has a beneficial impact, or whether it's a placebo effect? Who knows, but it's what I, personally, do.

I hope you feel better soon.

It may be that my throat is just my weak point, I suppose. I had chronic strep until I had my tonsils out as a teen, but then I went a good almost-20 years without throat problems. I'm thin and fit and eat low carb (no grains at all). I had a sore throat for 2 years before I got diagnosed (repeated strep tests showed nothing), and then when I went low carb, which initially got my sugars under control, the sore throat miraculously cleared up. Now my sugars have been creeping up again and my sore and hoarse throat is back (among other things). I am using OTC cold medicine and sugar free lozenges but it's a pain, and I was hoping there might be something else I could do.

Glink - I get the same problem, sugar goes up and I get a sore throat. very odd. Not a bacterial sore throat but is painful and feels swollen.

Hello I’m newly diagnosed. Did you ever get this under control I have the same symptom?

Sounds like silent reflux to me actually. Acid comes up and irritates the throat and the voice box. See and ENT for an official diagnosis - but it’s probably related to something you’re eating causing bloating or poor digestion.
