Higher glucose readings in the morning

I have recently been diagnosed with type 2.

I am getting myself all wound up with my glucose readings but as my wife says I may be getting wound up over nothing?

My glucose readings in the morning are between 6 & 7. I also take a reading just before my dinner at evening time and they are between 5 & 6 sometimes even as low as 4.5.

My concern is that if I can keep my readings low during the day then why are they seemingly higher in the morning after 7 hours sleep?

This has been a major change in my life as 5 weeks ago on a fasting blood test at the docs my reading was 15.6.

I haven't looked at a chinese or indian takeaway in that time or any chocolate or haribos, lol.

I am still confused a bit and find it very hard to eat properly if going out for a meal.

No longer able to order what I want to order but having to order what is deemed to be the best dish on the menu for my condition.

Any helpful comments to this post would be greatly appreciated.

hi northlanguy,
those readings are good - congrats on getting them down so well since your diagnosis.
The higher morning readings (although, to be honest, between 6 and 7 is not really "high" at all) are due to the so-called Dawn Phenomenon, a well-known issue for diabetics. It is explained here -

So anyway it sounds like you're doing really well. I am type 2, being pretty careful about my diet and testing regularly, and find I can eat good chocolate (e.g. Green & Black's 85%) in modest quantities most days without a problem. I also couldn't face life without curries - but it's rice and nan that's the problem, not the curries themselves. Popadoms seem to be OK with me, as are all kinds of pickles and a couple of bottles of Cobra. So clearly there is a god after all.

Hi northlanguy :)

As Dobbs says, that would be the dawn phenomena!

You just need to have a small smackerel before going to bed when you have a low bedtime reading; sometimes I have a small cup of milk or a small piece of fruit and it seems to work well for me. Experiment and see what works best for you. 8)
