for the last week I have been randomly taking blod/glucose readings & the max was 9.1. this morning it was 11.1 -- a mini panic set in so i rang the doctor! the receptionist said a doctor will ring straight back --- I waited for 3 hours, rang again they said they will remind the doctor to ring back, 4 hrs later I called into the surgery in my wheelchair, they said "ohh the doctor said it was ok & to come back in in 4 weeks" (i am on 500gm metaformin per day') to get a realistic answer I had to grab a practice nurse who told me up 20 is ok? what is the parameter of reading ? & do spikes happen often?

Given that you were only diagnosed 2 weeks ago, your BG levels are kinda of consistent with your HbA1c score of 8%, which represents an average BG of about 10mmol/l.

There is no need to panic, but you need to try and reduce the scores to less than 7.8% 2 hours after you've eaten.

Your nurse was talking absolute rubbish. Scores of anywhere near 20mmol/l are certainly not OK. Although they probably won't do you much immediate damage they'll significantly increase the liklehood of complications in the relatively near future. I was pretty ill all around when by BG was above 20mmol/l.
