Higher than normal sugar levels

Hi all,

Firstly it's not me who's diabetic (I have my own problems lol)...OH has type 2 diabetes with complications. His diabetes is normally well controlled and his consultant pleased with him. However, in the last few days and for no reason whatsoever his blood sugar readings are coming up mostly 13.0 or 16.0 which is very high for him. Usually if they are that high it's because he's eaten something he shouldn't and he can determine the cause but this time there doesn't seem to be a reason. He has diabetic kidney disease and peripheral neuropathy to add to his woes and he's late 70's in age. I was wondering if anyone here could help ascertain why his readings should be going the way they are atm. He is on insulin three times a day and it's usually good control for him. I'm rather worried about his readings now and wonder what this may indicate.

Many thanks for your help and being a first time poster I trust I've put this in the correct section.

best wishes to all

Hi :)

welcome to the forum..... There are lots of threads on the forum for you and hubby to read. Loads of education ....

Regarding your post ..........sometimes, bg levels do change for us all using insulin. That's not at all uncommon. Sometimes, there is a reason and sometimes there doesn't appear to be, it's just the way the body changes its needs.

The only thing I can suggest to you to do is look at the times hubby's bg levels go up and then look at the amount of carb that has been eaten 2-3hrs earlier. There are 2 things that you can do that will alter bg levels and that is .... 1) is to eat less carb or 2) inject a tiny bit more insulin. You will of course need to test bg so that you can see what effect the changes you have made will have on hubby's bg levels.

What insulin is hubby using? If he is injecting 3 times a day, is this using mixed insulin or is he using bolus/basal?

Hi iHS

Thanks for the reply. I think we are more concerned because it's never done this before for no reason and is always steady on whatever carbs he has and insulin but will now keep a check on it as you suggest. Insulin he uses are as follows: Humalog Mix25 (morning) Humalog (before dinner) and Humulin I (before bed). He varies the dose to the bg reading. He's going to monitor this change now and will see the GP if it continues, I just wondered if anyone else could give an indication as to why it's happened all of a sudden.

Thanks again for your reply.
