Hello,my daughter has had her pump now for about six weeks.Although I can see the benefits of it we have one particular problem that I am finding very frustrating. My daughter goes to bed at 7.30pm and we always check at 11pm.Some nights her levels are great when tested and remain so through out the night. The next night the level at 11pm will be slightly high and then we will be having to give her a correction in the middle of the night.I have noticed that if she is under ten when tested at 11pm then she stays at a good level all night. However on the nights where she is just over ten we are having to correct. This all seems to happen regardless of what she eats for supper and whether or not she has had a bolus.I have tested her nightime basal rates and they were fine.I just wondered if anyone had experienced this or might have some idea as to why it is happening.thanks.martina

Hi,

I'm not sure if your post has been answered before as i seem to recall maybe you posted this question elsewhere too? or you may have re-posted because it went unanswered before, either way i thought i'd try help:)

Your post is quite a puzzler, so i'm going to ask a few things and maybe some ideas can be thrown around (hopefully)

When you say you tested her basal did have you done this from 7.30pm-11pm? as well as overnight?

When is her last meal before bed usually? and what sort of food is the last meal?

is she sometimes active before bed time? or does any strenuous activity at all after school or anything? exercise can affect the body long after stopping.

How old is your daughter? is she likely to sneak food near bed time or sweets or anything?

I'm trying to think of as many reasons as possible you see so please correct me if i'm suggesting anything wrong :)

thanx.Yes have posted this before but havent been able to sort it out yet, maybe theres no answer. Her dsn has told us to just ride it out and see what happens as the other levels are good.My daughter is 8,I know that she isnt sneaking sweets or any other food going to bed.She usually has a piece of toast before she goes to bed at 7.30pm.I started the basal testing from 10pm,2am 4am and 6am.I dont think that her activity levels are the problem as she doesnt do any strenuous exercise, she plays out most evening but we do give her a snack to cover this.I have thought about stopping that snack incase she is having to much to eat before bed, however without it she would be hypo at 7.30pm-8pm.Perhaps the cause of this is something beyond our control but it is so frustrating and gets you down.Thanx for the ideas.

It sounds as though if she's playing out, she might need a Temp Basal Rate set rather than a snack, this may help to avoid the hypo the next morning..

Gauging exercise levels is difficult when you'll gauging your own, let alone when you'll trying to gauge somebodies else's...

I wonder if you got a pedometer, (one of those things that count the steps) for your daughter, this might help with determining activity level's.. As they work by impact movement to count the steps you are taking!

My theory is that if the impact of walking clicks the counter over, so for a child any jumping, gigging around should in theory click the counter over! This hopefully be enough to help identify a rough idea to what level of activity she's done, as she been sat down chin wagging with her mate or has she been playing chase, skipping or dancing around!
