Hi debbie and welcome to the forum.
There are other parents of Type 1 children here and they will help you out with any queries. Some are new to the game and some are very knowledgable and helpful. All the parents support each other.

Look forward to your postings,

Catherine.

Hi,

My soon to be 18 year old son has had type one since he was 12.

He does most of the day to day looking after of his diabetes himself now. I still do a lot of organisational stuff, food preparation and of course getting him out of bed in the morning.

I remember the first few weeks after diagnosis as overwhelming but it all really does become quite a routine thing over the first year. Actually you are already over the worst! Well done.

To start with I was very very concerned about complications. I am a lot less worried about this now as we have found ways to reduce blood sugar swings. Last week, Steven went out to a Chinese buffet restaurant with his mates, ate a lot of rubbish like the other teenagers, and came home with normal blood sugars.

You will never be able to ignore the fact that your child has diabetes, but you will all be able to have "normal" lives.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Debbie, and welcome! My son was diagnosed as type 1 at the age of 14 - he is almost 19 now ... and we are still learning how to get good control together. It is a massive learning curve, and I can hoestly say that this forum has really opened our eyes and given us loads of new ideas about how to get better control. Me and AJ (my son) usually sift through the forum of an evening - we have tried out some recipe suggestions and have really adopted the low carb attitude. To start with it is all daunting, overwhelming, gutting, everything really all at once. BUT everything will get better. AJ does everything he wants to do .... gym, socialising, driving (drinking!!! in moderation ofcourse) and holidays - the first time he went away I gave all his mates the biggest lecture in the world!!! Now all of his good friends have an understanding of diabetes and know how to treat a hypo .... they have all also taken a great interest in his i phone ap which he uses to record his readings.
Dont feel as though you are alone. Visit the forum regulary and post anything that you are worried about.
Good luck
Debbie :)
