Hi,

Im coming up to my first holiday abroad in 5 years, has been a long wait but 2 weeks await me in Greece, 35 degree heat, a few beers, nice (sensible food) :D

Thing is this is my first holiday as an adult where I have been in control/looking aftyer myself.

I know everyone will react differently but can what can I expect in terms of BGs, Im not going to go daft but obviously for the two weeks of the year that i have worked for i want to be able to enjoy myself...

Is there any handy practical hints people can give me? So I can make myself a bit of a guide?

Thanks

Very jealous of you going on holiday! Sure you will have a lovely time :)

I find that I need less insulin in the heat, and I have heard a few others say the same thing. You're meal times will probably be a little less regular too, so you'll just have to bear that in mind when you're doing your insulin. Ice creams round the pool might cause a few highs, too!

Just do a few tests during the day and you will be fine. I always have to adjust my lunchtime dose as I tend to eat a lot later than normal.

Greece isn't too far away so the flight shouldn't have too much of an affect. Make sure you have all your insulin in your hand luggage. Some people take a doctors note for airport security but I have never done this, and I travel a lot.

Anyway, hope this helps. Have a lovely time! Em x

What I do is try to stick to the same breakfast and lunch. That way you can figure out how much insulin you will need and have decent sugar levels for most of your holiday.

Sun sea and sand - just think of all of us in the wind, rain grey skies. I'm not jealous honest

I'm just back from two wonderful weeks in Portugal and I only had 1 mild hypo. I got some spikey mornings because I was either hasty when working out my bolus or/and wasn't putting my basal in at the same time each morning. I stuck to straightforward meals which helped me to match my bosuls. I beer everyday and it didn't make too much difference which is odd as the beers in the uk make me rise a bit, perhaps the high temps lowers sugar levels.

Have a great time.
