hi this may sound silly but when you go on holiday how do you know what to eat, you can't ask everyone what sugar is in there food.

Not silly.
Some countries possibly easier than others I would think.
Try to stick what you know and like and leave behind that which might be carbie.
I stick to meat, veg and salad and red wine.
Have a good holiday.

One easy way is to download the carbs and cals app (also available as a book) as this gives an excellent reference for most standard foods and meals. I was also advised to pre-measure common foods I eat at home to calculate their carb content in relation to comparable measures ... i.e. fist sized serving of mashed potato or rice, or a palm sized piece of pizza is approximately x grams of carbs. The thing is, you will go crazy trying to work out if you are eating exactly 12g or 14g of carbs, but in reality, I don't believe it really makes that much difference.

I stick to plain foods - grilled or fried meat or fish, vegetables and salad. I do have the occasional portion of rice, potatoes or pasta. Red wine is ok. I don't usually have desserts, though I can be tempted by some fresh fruit.
I do test every morning, though not after every meal, to check that I am on track.

To be honest, most of it is common sense and mindfulness, whilst accepting there could be some surprises along the way.

Rice, bread, potatoes and pasta will still be carb-tastic wherever you have them in the world (unfortunately!). As someone has suggested Carbs and Cals or MyFitnessPal are useful to get a rough idea of how things stand.

If you stick, mainly, with what you know works for you, you won't go too far wrong. If you're going on holiday for a week or two, the odd blip and oooops, won't harm you. If you decide to just leave the wagon behind when you leave these shores, it might not be for the best, as sometimes it can be tricky to get back on it!

Have a great holiday. :)

My thoughts are that you are on holiday. Holidays may not come round too often and we work hard to afford them. Don't let diabetes control you. Relax, don't worry about how much sugar is in it, just avoid the obvious starchy carb stuff as much as possible (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes etc), eat meat, fish, veggies, eggs, salads, Have an odd treat. And yes, some red wine. Enjoy!

Thank you all for your advice, the other bit I can't get my head round is they always tell you to eat fruit but I now find out lot of the fruit has lots of sugar in them.

There's an expression: A banana is a banana - even in France.

I was only diagnosed in October. This summer we are going to Scotland. Scotland is all meat and what are veg? so no issues about overloading on sugar.
However, I do have a separate problem looming: a week in Malta - no pizza, or pasta, but there's always fish and green salads. Desert? forget it, ice cream and cake. No thanks

Oh and by the way, as a Type 2 diabetic, I have no problem at all asking what is in dishes, whether I am at a restaurant or at a friend's house for dinner. I know exactly what I want to eat as my last meal when the day comes that I am ready to die, but today is not that day. People understand. Don't be shy to ask.
