Hi .. Have just been told i have type 2 diabetic and am going on holiday to Spain, staying in a hotel .. am a bit worried now about the food ...anyone got any ideas of what i should / should not eat ..anyone any tips .. many thanks for any help ..

I would look forward to that cos I like Spanish food. Especially fish ... big barbecued sardines etc. Apply the same thoughts as you do in a restaurant here ... will they do a special order so as not to waste food, or shall I just take what comes and leave what I don't want to eat? Breakfasts should provide eggs & bacon at least. Plenty of omelettes and salads. If they have lots of lovely fruit, don't look at it. Worst case scenario, find the Brit quarter and go for a fry-up.
PS Take a snack for the flight.

Hi @dvd , welcome. If you have just been diagnosed you have probably not been given any decent dietary advice. What the NHS currently advocate is pretty useless since they say to eat carbs with every meal. Carbs is what you should be reducing to control your blood sugars. See the thread linked in my sig below, also www.dietdoctor.com/lchf (and Dr Andreas Eenfeldt has a good new book out too).

So you should cut out starchy carbs such as bread, potatoes, rice and pasta as much as you can as well as obvious sugars and tropical fruits. And beer.

But in Spain you should be able to get plenty of meat, fish, veg and salad. Tapas snacks are also good if you pick the low carb ones. Cheese and eggs are fine. Dry white wine and red wine in sensible amounts is OK.

Do you know what your diagnosis blood levels were (HbA1c)? Have you been prescribed any meds?

Plenty of advice on here from those with the T-shirt - read around and ask any questions.

I'd be afraid of the Paella.

Do you have a meter to test your BG?

Hi all .. thanks for all the replys and for the very helpful advice ..to sanguine am afraid i never asked what the blood levels were the dr just said you have got diabetis but its not to bad, did not prescribe meds said stay off sugar, cakes etc and the nurse will see you Thursday, so i will ask a few questions then ..hope the nurse sill tell me wherd to get a monitor ..have started to try more healty eating, got a nutribullet and am doing the greens veg thing .. also have a halogen oven so am cooking chicken and lean meats in it minus the oil .. 2 small pieces of fruit daily when i get peckish .. a small bowl porrige for supper .. will keep u posted to my progress ..

If you're not on any meds it's very unlikely you will be offered a meter, the DN will probably say you don't need to test. Get yourself one - SD Codefree is popular because the strips are the cheapest.

With a meter you may discover that the fruit and porridge aren't doing you any favours.
