Another question

Our daughter is 8 and was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. We are traveling to Florida next month for a two week family holiday.

Does anyone have a holiday check list.

Things we are worried about.

How much medication to take.

How much in hand luggage. Fluids through security. How to keep her spare insulin cool during travel.
Do we have to keep it in our hold baggage. What if that goes missing. Would just be my luck.

NEVER put insulin in hold luggage - it will freeze and be useless afterwards.

Most of us use the Frio travel bags for insulin - you can find them on Amazon/E-bay.

My general advice is to carry everything in hand luggage and take more than she would normally get through in that time.

Reading the 'official rules' you need a letter from the doc' to say that you're travelling with sharps. I have such a letter but have never been asked for it. Your doctor may charge for producing it, if so, ask at the hospital and they usually print them for free.

Be wary of any airline staff who want to put her insulin in the airplane's freezer - they mean well, bless them.

Hi,

Keep it all in hand luggage, insulin can freeze in the hold and become useless.

You can get Frio wallets/bags to store insulin and keep it cool.

As for security they should be pretty used to us diabetics carrying insulin/sharps through but have a prescription or doctor's letter with you in case.

I would take the insulin she is using and a spare in case you need it.

Test lots as the excitement and change in routine may have an impact so loads of strips.

My only suggestion to add to the others' would be if your travel insurance was taken out before your daughter was diagnosed, I'd contact the insurers, just to inform them. If they want any additional information, you have time to get it, and much easier whilst in UK. The diagnosis shouldn't make any difference to the cover or cost you have, as that was all agreed before diagnosis, but it's just good they know.

Of course, it's highly unlikely you will neeed to call on the insurance, but if there are to be any queries, best get them out of the way in the calm of UK.
