Not been on here for a while but here goes,

Going on holiday to Florida for 3 weeks in November,I keep on thinking this is going to be a nightmare with all the wrong foods over there.

My meds have been gone up to 2000mg metformin and 160 mg gliclazide, now starting to have cotton mouth and sweats again don't know what to do
Any ideas please

Have you been testing your levels, keeping a food diary, and eating to what your meter says? Or have you become a bit complacent? It may be time to go back to basics and start again.

As for your holiday, yes there will be wrong foods over there, but there will also be delicious low carb ones too. There are just as many wrong foods over here! Whatever, a holiday is for enjoyment and relaxing, not stressing. Just look carefully at what is on offer and choose wisely.

On holiday in Florida now... Most restaurants will swap items around eg salad for fries. Meat is king over here so LCHF is relatively easy not sure how it would be for vegetarians. Buffet restaurants like Sweet Tomatoes focus on salad. Steak and BBQ restaurants will do meats without sauces or for chains like Sonny's they do a dry run for ribs so no sugar. For drinks ask for lite not diet. If self catering you have whole foods and aldi. Publix has better fruit and veg than Walmart but I bought a box of lettuce 12 inches by 6 inches by 4 inches for $3.96 in Walmart. Apples are best avoided as too much wax but nice blueberries and strawberries. Look for heavy cream rather than the squirty type which tends to have lots of additives. Cheese and ham much better now - go for the sharp cheddar and I even found feta this time round. Avoid baked beans - imagine beans stewed in brown sugar and you'd be close. Iced tea is worth a try though go for unsweetened. You can also buy mixed in Walmart and dollar tree that you add to water - zero to 5 cals. Bacon is streaky so best served overdone. Free range eggs are available. Nuts easy to find as are crackers etc if you need to carry something for hypos. Which part of Florida are you visiting?

BTW have been here a week and BS between 5 and 7 80% of time - which for me is building on improvement from UK as T2 LCHF but needing insulin. Make sure you have good insurance healthcare is expensive.

Staying in a Disney hotel for 10 days then onto I drive for 11 days

I know I will find this so difficult as my wife and daughter will not want to eat the same things as me

You aren't obliged to eat the same as the others. My husband eats loads of carbs. I just don't look at his plate. :)

That's good to know mate
Have good insurance
Still quite worrying tho
Thanks

I drive is easy. Lots of choice and all will swap items. I recommend fogo de Chao for high end $50 per head special occasions. Golden corral is a buffet restaurant chain, meat, salads, breads etc - I eat low carb there, family eat high carb! Lots of choice I really wouldn't worry. Disney are great so if on dining plan and eating in park they will serve burgers without buns and have huge smoked turkey legs which everyone eats and no carbs! Disney restaurants have lots of choice and will always have something you can adapt. I am gluten free and it's easy for me and the food is very tasty. Your family will be so overwhelmed with their own choices they won't worry about yours. Breakfast at Disney will be the hardest as pancakes and waffles are prevalent but go for the bacon and eggs and you'll be fine. Just don't follow the American tradition.of adding syrup. :)

Hi. We go to Florida in November every year, and it is usually pretty bad for my weight, although my BS stays OK. The problem I usually have is the bread because I like the variety available, especially a small German bakery in Sarasota. But this year, I will be off bread completely, just like at home.
My other problem is ice cream, but I do love their varieties. I will continue to have my one ice cream a day, just as I do whenever or wherever I'm on holiday. Otherwise, what's the point?
I don't actually think it's more difficult than the UK once you find your way round the stores. Eating out is much the same as well, given that I don't eat bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc - you just have to ask for what you want and most restaurants are very helpful.

We spent a week in Florida 2 months after I had started low carb.. not a problem.. Loads of salad options and plenty of meaty things too. Burgers without chips or buns if nothing else is available. The US was where Atkins started so quite a lot of places will be more used to low carb than in the UK.
