Advice ? Yes, test, test test.
You are not alone in getting this advice from a GP, and I think it's basically because they do not want to dish out meters to T2's.

I was sure I wasnt alone & my father (aslo Diabetic, but on Insulin) is totally outraged at the fact Im told not to test, especially as Im not controlled at the moment.
Wish I could afford to by my own strips & lancets but I just cant!
Codefree meter is the cheapest. And is apparently not bad.It's possible to get the meter as a freebie. Cost of strips would obviously depend on how often you test but needn't be too prohibitive. @Bluetit1802 can offer some more guidance on cost.

What medication are you on?
If you are on Gliclazide (or similar) and drive, you could ask for them stating that you do need to test before driving.
