Hi all

I've not been on for a couple of weeks as I've been a bit busy but I wanted to give you all an update.

I started L/C about 6 weeks ago with BG of around 18.8 on a morning. I dont take any medication as I am against it but if this doeasnt work after a few more weeks I have agreed to start taking metformin.

Anyway I loved my sweet puds, biscuits, cakes, bread. You get the picture !

So when I started really feeling ill and getting periferal nueropathy in my legs to the point where my mobility was under threat I made a decision to save my life and limbs and went cold turkey low carb. Initially there was slow progress but I have been getting BG lately of between 6.6 and upto 8.9 after food, it seems to want to settle around an average of 7.5 on a morning but when I eat now although it rises it soon comes back down and I dont get the high sugar sleepy feelings I was getting.

My legs have improved, still got weak muscles but that can be improved with excercise but my general health is a million times better. I am more alert, have more energy and can feel very slight changes in my body as if I am mending albeit veryvery slowly.

Weight wise it hasnt dropped off me although I have lost but that was not my main driver, I have cut out sweet stuff, pasta, bread, rice, in fact everything that I felt was contributing to my demise.

Dont get me wrong it has been hard and at times of stress it would be a doddle to get a big fat cream cake or a massive sandwich and although tempted I just keep reminding myself this is for life and if i want to die early or lose a limb then go right ahead and eat it but if not then get something else.

I have experiemented with various things and have been surprised by results. I had a banana to see how badly it would affect me as i need an energy boost during the day as I work 11 hr shifts in a call centre and we only get very short breaks apart from lunch so I had my healthy lunch and the later in the day I had a banana and when I got home my BG was at its lowest so far so I would like your imput on the good old nana. I know they are packed with natural sugar but do they have any benefits mineral wise?

Also Honey, again I know it is sweet but how does this fit in L/C if at all as it is a pure sweetness from nature, again imput would be good. I am not talking about having honey by the shovel load but wondered if a small teaspoon would hurt with my food now and again.

One last question, my partner mentioned almond flour for an alternate pastry / base is this any good and how does it affect BG generally.

Anyway all is good in the hood so far, I am keeping on keeping on and will keep you all in the loop

Thanks for all of the support you gave in the early days

Cheers

Tony

bananas contain potassium, which is used in sending nerve signals. In addition the amount of sugar depends of the ripeness. i can only eat a bit of a banana or one of the tiny ones i buy for the grandchildren.

Hi

I have a banana most days around 1pm (lunch about 11.30) and by 3pm my bg level is usually 4. something. Doesn't seem to affect me.Don't know about honey as I haven't tried it since diagnosis-thought it would be too sweet and would put levels up.

Hi Tony!

Really glad to hear things are going well for you. I struggle with banana and honey, but I'm not type 2, so probably best to see what other Type 2s advise. Almond flour is good. Does almost nothing to my BG. I use it to bake all sorts of things but especially low-carb muffins -sweet and savoury. Keep them in the freezer and you've always got a low-carb snack available. One word of warning though - almond flour is a bit fattening, so might not help your weight loss!
