yep, my dietition was also happy with low carb, and went on to say low fat..... deadly silence when I asked how you can be low carb and low fat without being high proteinJust been for my first clinic appointment since getting my pump and they said I'm doing brilliantly which I'm over the moon with considering I've never been on a carb counting course.
My nurse is lovely and went over some things I can improve on like stop over eating when I get a low.
There was a new dietician (sp?) I've never seen one since I was a teenager (now 28) she wanted to have a chat with me so we went n sat in another room n she asked what kind of diet I have what my meals are like etc, when I said the words 'low carb high fat' you would think I had just mugged her nan.
She was horrified...
she told me that cutting down on carbs was ok, but the amount of calories I must be consuming was definitely NOT ok.
I should not be having cream, and butter, and cheese oh I could go on the list was endless, basically the only kind of fat she was ok with me having was olive oil... She gave me a list of low gi foods and said I am best to stick with this. I explained my readings since starting LCHF have been great but all she kept banging on about was calories, said I should have a muller light instead of the full fat Greek yog, I asked even though the muller light is packed with sugar? She said it's got some sweeteners in it which are ok, I shouldn't listen to people saying they are packed with sugar, and I should be eating more fruit, I asked what types, she said grapes, bananas, cherries, oranges Blah blah I stopped listening after this.
Does everyone have this kind of lecture with a dietician when they say they are LCHF?
In fairness, her formal training will have been based on the accepted theories of the last 50 years which includes some very shaky research on the impact of saturated fat on the risk of heart disease. This now seems to be increasingly refuted, but I think Sweden is one of the few countries to have revised its eating guidelines to promote LCHF.Just been for my first clinic appointment since getting my pump and they said I'm doing brilliantly which I'm over the moon with considering I've never been on a carb counting course.

@Mrsass - that doesn't surprise me. It's still a diet generally associated with high risk to health. I remember when i first read about it and how it went against 'conventional' wisdom. I reckon NHS policies and attitudes will change significantly as more scientific research comes to the fore regarding LCHF.
Having said all that, I've never been able to stick to it properly due to a sweet tooth and liking for cakes / bread. Generally get to about Tuesday afternoon before giving in. My Monday numbers are always good though

Partnership and empowerment....two of my favourite words ....along with equality and respect for all ...sounds good to ask for bloods ....I have had a great dietician experience with great support , not all about diabetic diets needs , no I need more help at times .for which I gave been grateful for ..hope your benefits are what you want ...Best wishes ..KatThankfully mine was more positive! Mine did agree with the LCHF approach, but then this wasn't an NHS dietician. This one was recently graduated and had his finger on the pulse of dietetics news. Thank goodness for that because I was expecting something more like the response you got.
I'm going for a new patient health check today with my new GP surgery, will be interesting to see what clap trap she spouts about my diet. I entered low carb in the "diet" space as I wasn't going to lie. I don't aim for high fat to be honest, but equally I don't hold back on it if I'm hungry. I've been doing this 2 months almost and I'm going to ask for some repeat bloods after 6 as I want to know if I'm getting any benefit from it and whether I've upset anything else in the attempt to get healthier.
I think one thing I'm fast realising is that they are limited what advice they can give, so I won't lie if I don't intend on following it, but equally I'll make up my own mind. We're supposed to be in partnership together after all LOL.
not mine,Just been for my first clinic appointment since getting my pump and they said I'm doing brilliantly which I'm over the moon with considering I've never been on a carb counting course.

I'd disagree based on my experience.Yep. But then stupid is as stupid does........
I think they are all of the same mentality as those folks who believe the earth is flat!!!!! They love science .....unless it proves LCHF rocks!
I know you've had a positive one but mine is horrendous! Within a week of being diagnosed I went hyper at work. As soon as I had been diagnosed, given a box of met and told to look at the diabetes uk advice, which is shocking, I decided to eat LCHF. The website is written by a doc, the science seemed logical and I couldn't get my head around the fact that the advice from duk was advising me to eat something which raised my bs when I was on meds to bring it down. I was sent home from work and told to sort myself out. Yes, they actually had a go at me and told me my diet was dangerous and that I'd end up having a heart attack or a stroke! I went to the docs, was made to sit in a waiting room for 2 hours and forced to see the dn. She didn't take my bs (negligent), read my food diary, had a go at me and told me that LCHF was dangerous and that I needed to eat more carbs. She told me that diabetes was progressive and that I'd be on insulin shortly. When I politely explained why I was struggling to follow this advice, she refused to see me again, refused to give me an explanation as to why the healthy plate was a good idea and insisted that I saw the hospital. She also refused me a meter.I'd disagree based on my experience.
But they may be able to sense that telling me to eat more bread and potatoes is not likley to provoke a positive response, whereas I'm all over that low GI sh*t
