I know this is too late but it may help for any future trips to the hospital...
In my experience, the nurses on hospital wards have little detailed knowledge of diabetes and generally prefer the patient, if they are able, to do all their own monitoring and treatment of their diabetes. I am type1 and have always been left to take my own insulin and blood sugar levels as long as they are then recorded by a nurse on my charts. If there are any diabetes related issues that arise like hypos etc, they may get more involved but I've found that usually means calling for the diabetes specialist nurse as the ward nurses don't tend to like getting involved in the ins and outs of diabetes care.... This is just an observation of my experiences by the way, I am not making any comment on the quality of nursing!
I'm not sure why you say you needed a sliding drip - more info on why you are in hospital might be useful for members to be able to help you.
