Hospital referral?

I've just moved back home after university and I'm trying to get myself all sorted with everything here.
I was only diagnosed with type 1 diabetes whilst at university, so I have no idea if what they are telling me a home is normal or not...
I asked whether I needed to be referred to the hospital or not and the GP said that it was only if I was pregnant, on a pump or unstable so said that I didn't need to be referred as my diabetes is stable.
Whilst at university I was seen by a consultant once a year to check that I wasn't having any problems and I was also in contact with a DSN. But not sure if this is only because I was newly diagnosed.
I am 22 and was diagnosed 3 and a half years ago. Treatment with both insulin and tablets.

I just want to check if that is right? Should a type 1 be seen only under GP care or should I also be seen at the hospital?
(I can get my annual review done at my GP practice, so would not need to go to the hospital for that)

Many hospital clinics have referred diabetic patients who are well controlled back to the care of their gp practise, that said I was one but asked to be referred back to the hospital clinic as I found their expertise in type 1 more beneficial, discuss with your gp if they'll refer you to the care of your hospital....nothing lost!

I'll second what noblehead said. Specialist clinics obviously know what they're talking about - a lot more than GPs. In my experience GPs are **** at giving out diabetes advice. If you need advice, or if you think your hba1c is too high then I'd insist on seeing a DSN if I were you. I've done it in the past when I couldn't get my hba1c down. The GP told me to gave me some rubbish generic advice - "give yourself more insulin" which wasn't the answer to my problem and I insisted in seeing a DSN.
