Hot & cold drinks

I like my coffee! Now that I have been diagnosed with T2 diabetes I drink decaff. My question is can I drink as much as I want during the day? Please can you also advise me on what fruit drinks I can buy, which do not contain high levels of sugar..Regards Pete :)

Hi Peter,
I too drink decaff coffee and tea and do not limit myself. If you are carb counting then the added milk has to be included. I also drink lots of plain water.
Cannot help you with the fruit drinks as I do not drink any but keep away from fruit juices as most have high levels of sugar and no added sugar does not mean that they are sugar free. They will also spike your blood sugar as they do not have the fibre of fresh fruit.
Hope someone comes along if they drink any squashes as I have seen people recommend some of these.

Catherine.

Hi Catherine,

When time permits I squeeze a pink grapefruit every morning and drink the juice. I've also just started using Tesco's own brand pink grapefuit juice (not from concentrate). It seems pulpy with lots of bits in, so I dring this when I'm in a hurry.

Must admit though, I haven't done any before and after test strips to see if it is comparible with the real thing or not.

Peter,

There is no restrictions on drinking tea or coffee with diabetes, unless you have any other medical reason not to. As Catherine states, if you are a strict carb counter and like your coffee milky, you may have to include this in your daily allowance. I carb count and drink around 8 mugs a day, but I only like a splash of milk, so don't include this in my allowance. Tea and coffee can make up part of your daily fluid requirement, but you are better to still drink at least 4-5 glasses of water a day.

I can't recommend fruit juice, I just drink sugar-free squash, but just read the nutritional info on packs/bottles for the carb content of the fruit juice.

I drink plenty of coffee and tea but don't take milk and they have no effect on my BS - Fruit juces however spike my BS and I never touch them unless I am having a hypo and then only a small glass - in fact last night I had a hypo of 3.5 so had about 3oz of orange juice and tested 15 minutes later and was 5.1

If you like squashes I get the no added sugar mexican lime from Tesco - its nice because its a sharp taste and not very sweet but refreshing - great in Shwepps diet lemonade and of course the odd lager!

I drink lots of tea and coffee - some decaffeinated and some not. I vary the types throughout the day. All of them I drink black usually with a sweetener. I drink plenty of water too.

A nice fizzy drink that I've found recently is Tesco's Diet Fiery Ginger Beer.

In pubs or restaurants, I usually drink red wine and sparkling water. I hardly ever drink the higher carbohydrate beer or lager these days.

I never drink fruit juices ever since I discovered how high they sent my blood glucose levels.
