Type 1 How can I gain weight?

Type of diabetes
Type 1
I've always been pretty skinny. I'm just over 6ft and before diagnosis I peaked at about 150lbs. Since diagnosis though, I've lost about a stone in weight and have struggled to put it back on. I now weight around 135-40lbs. Last week my BMI was calculated by my hospital to be 18.4, which isn't enough, basically.

This may sound like a stupid question but all I want to know is how to put on weight. I feel like I eat a lot, and I can't imagine how I could change my diet in a way that would allow me to put on lots of weight without messing with my bloods too much. Has anyone experienced a similar problem or have any advice for me?

Thanks!

Do you avoid foods that are high in carbs? I can understand that avoiding food that tend to rise blood sugar makes it alot easier to manage blood sugar levels, but if you avoid the food that's raising your blood glucose it would be way harder to gain weight, just keeping your current weight would be harder.
I do not have type 1 diabetes, but I would think that increasing your intake of carbs will help alot in gaining weight. A fun fact, insulin are in fact a growth hormone, so increasing your intake of carbs won't only help because you'll get in more calories, but it will have a dobble effect because it would require a bigger dosage of insulin.
I can understand that many type 1 diabetics are afraid of taking too much insulin, so as a solution they either start to avoid carbs or decrease their intake of food that make a rapid increase of blood sugar. This solution will both make blood sugar control easier, but also make it easier to lose weight. So if you really want to gain weight you have to learn and get used to eating foods that are rich in carbs as well, and learn to control it with a higher dosage of insulin.

Hi jl
I am.type 2 but I am also trying to gain weight and slowly it is. going on.I eat plenty of fat (the good kind) for instance I have an avocado every day and most days I finish my evening meal with full fat yoghurt Jersey double cream and a few almonds and a little fruit .I put butter on my veg and I eat lots of cheese and nuts. When I was diagnosed the dietition suggested a supplement called Calogen (I think that is right) it is virtually liquid lard and not very nice to take but it did add a little weight on Maybe your GP would prescribe it for you Hope this helps
