how can you lose weight healthily as a type 1?

Hi,

Try reducing your portion size and learn about using the low-gi approach to eating healthy. Also cut back on the amount of fat you eat, and try to make food from scratch if you can. Regular exercise each day, even just walking for 30-60 mins is helpful in reducing weight.

hya,
the way i did it was to go lower carb so i didnt need to inject as much and also walking, my rule is to only inject upto 3 units per meal, this has worked for me, ive lost over 6 stone and eat lots of good foods, especially fresh veg, good luck :D

as a VERY recently diagnosed diabetic (februrary 2010) your question has been on my mind since i came round after the DKA. over a period of about a year i lost weight and finally started feeling good about my image but now i am paranoid of gaining it all and i feel completely lost with everything. this sounds silly but i am so grateful for your post.!

I lost about 8kg just from low carbing and I'm not particularly strict ( I was thin anyway). I low-carbed by default as I cut out gluten and I think that contributed to my weight loss.

Bernstein's book is a good resource for low carbing although he is waaaay strict.

Try not to get too hung up on weight though, there's so much more to life than how much you weigh! :D

Hi ya, portion control is key! Eat less, move more. It's not so hard if you look at it from an 'outsiders' view point - Stop eating when you feel full is another tip (which is easier said than done when you are eating chocolate cake  ) BUT it works. smaller portions, less on your plate so you won't be tempted to over eat :D good luck :D

Don't want this to become a war between low carb and non-low carb. This is an unbiased comment! I just wanted to mention that for those who are used to eating larger portions, it is probably easier to lose weight initially by doing a few weeks of lower carbs as you can then have normal portions but of non-carb or much lower carb food such as meats and cheeses, nuts, some kinds of veggies etc and not feel so hungry. Then you can adjust the diet again if you want, because you would then have the encouragement of having lost some weight and be motivated to try other routes to keep it going, which may or may not revolve round the carb issue. Sometimes you can skin the cat in two goes - half one way and half the other way!

Sunshinekisses - let us know how you get on, and fingers crossed you'll find a way soon.
