How do i help my Type 1 boyfriend want to look after himself

Hi there guys,

I'm 18, as is my boyfriend of 1 year. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 7 years old.
He regularly takes his insulin but i'm sure he doesn't take it properly, i NEVER see him take a blood test and he eats and drinks as much rubbish as he wants.
He constantly feels ill and the doctor has told him if it doesn't get better he wont be able to get his provisional license.

Have you got any advice for a worried girlfriend? Is there anyone i can contact to help him get back on track? He's coming to realize that he actually might have to start looking after himself properly but he's been abusing it like this since he was about 13, so what do we do ?
Anybody else been in the same situation and overcome it?
Thankyou in advance!!!

Hello Jess,

It won't just be his license that is at stake if he doesn't sort himself out, his eyesight, kidneys and feet could also suffer should he not start facing up to his condition pretty soon!

The first point of contact should be his diabetes care team to ask for advice, hopefully by working together with them he can soon sort these problems out.

Diabetes UK have a helpline where you can discuss matters with trained advisors, here is there contact details:

Good luck and hope he see's the error of his ways! :)

I abused myself for ages and didn't care. One day I decided to care... slipped again and now back on track. It happens and I think as he gets older he will keep being on track. Sorry, no real advice but it's great you care so much.
