How do I loose weight ????

Hello Everybody,

Hi from southern Spain, where, at the moment, it is the height of a very hot summer.
I have been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic for about a year. A change of doctor and a subsequent change of prescription has sorted me of--mostly. My daily medication is now 3 Metformin tablets + 17 units of insulin. Blood/sugar levels work out to be around 5.1 and a HBa1C reading of 6.8 on 26Mar13.

On my last visit to my doctor he was very pleased, except that he now wanted me to loose weight. At that visit I was 15 stone (6 foot, male and 62 years young). 95and quarter kilogrammes for those people not understanding old fashioned measurements of weight. Loose 7 kilos I was instructed.

Now comes the hard bit. I live in the mountains in Andelucia. Seven kilometers to the nearest village and not the sort of walk you would like to undertake in a temperature of 30+ degrees. So exercise was out of the question!!! Cutting down on carbohydrates seems to be good for the waistline but not good for the energy levels. Roughly at 10.00 am my energy levels are exhausted. I have lost some weight but I seem to be suffering from too many hours in my day and not enough energy.

Any suggestions?

Hi ****
I also live in southern Spain on the coast though. I understand what you say about too hot to exercise. I have kept my BG under control by eating a low carb no processed foods diet which works for me. I was never really overweight so I just maintain my weight. Its amazing how easy it is to do once you get into it. Hard thing was giving up the bocadillos and asking for brown bread. Good luck and roll on October when it cools down.

Hello **** in Spain,

Could you exercise in the evenings? (I'm just thinking of that wonderful poem... 'Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.')

A half hour stroll down the hill in the evening, followed by a half hour stumble up the hill, would probably do wonders... as will the salads, etc.

Good luck... and let us know how you get on.

Can I just modify the exercise program a bit. How about stumbling up the hill for half an hour and then having an easier walk home. Going downhill is just as good for you but feels easier.

Give us an idea of your daily diet and we can probably help more.

For example, what do you have for breakfast now you are reducing the carbs?

Cheers

Hi. Reducing carbs doesn't necessarily mean loss of energy. You can have more protein and fat which the body can use for energy; through ketosis if necessary. It may be you have cut down everything instead of just the carbs? Also go for low-GI carbs so that the body can use them over a longer period of time.
