how do u get ur hba1c ?

Generally you have to go to the doctor or nuse and have blood taken. This is then either sent away or ,in some surgeries ,tested on the spot and this gives you your Hba1c. Good ones are usually below 7%.The Hba1c is a percentage over 90 days, not to be confused with you daily reading from your test meter.

Hi there

I was given my hba1c by the doctor after a routine blood test came back with an abnormal blood sugar level and i got my results 2 days later and was diagnosed the same day

Hope that helps X

Donnamum,
The HbA1C is an indication of how good/bad blood glucose levels have been over the past 90-120 days, so the way to get it down is to improve blood glucose levels on a daily basis. The more highs, the higher the HbA1C will be. Your child's diabetes team are the people to ask about insulin levels etc. From personal experience I can say that 8% is not so bad for a child, I think they usually like to see 7's, but not usually lower (ie 6's) because of the risks of hypo's, which can affect children more badly than adults because their brains are still developing.

Anyway, if you are worries have a chat to your hospital team, I'm sure they will be happy re reassure and advise you.

hi donnamum,
a hba1c of 8% would put the average blood sugar at 10mmol/l.
So in order to reduce the hba1c reading you have lower the average
mmol/l reading over a period of time
(the hba1c can look back between 8-12 weeks).

A normal non-diabetic HbA1C is 3.5-5.5%. In diabetes about 6.5% is good.

hope this helps,
timo.
