So currently I have 3 main meals a day and take the bolus according with them. These meals are usually more then 4 hours apart so in theory the bolus is gone by then.

Now what would happen if I at like a meal say every 3 hours and it contained some carbs, would I need to inject again and would that not lead to insulin stacking as it's within the 4 hour window?

Or can should just take extra insulin with the previous meal e.g:-
  • 7am meal 1 (breakfast) Take insulin with additional units for meal 2
  • 10:am meal 2 (mid morning meal)
  • 1pm meal 3 (lunch) Take insulin with additional units for meal 3
  • 4pm meal 4 (mid afternoon snack)
  • 8pm meal 5 (dinner) Take insulin as normal

I graze throughout the day and inject every time I eat carbs.
As I carb count, and the insulin is calculated and timed for each meal/snack this works fine.

I have a pump so have to take insulin for everything but I think the advice when on MDI is you can eat up to 15g carbs between meals without insulin.

I guess what I'm asking is that if i had an in between meal with about 20g-30g of carbs should I take extra insulin with that meal or take additional insulin with the meal a few hours before? I just need to add more carbs to my diet tbh, bit prefer to spread them out.

I inject for what I eat. For instance, during christmas dinner I injected 6 times over a period of 3 to 4 hours, just took a new bolus every time I saw and decided what I was going to eat. Worked perfectly. But it only works because I'm on Fiasp now instead of Novorapid. With Novorapid I had to pre-bolus up to 45 minutes to prevent spiking, with Fiasp I can inject right before eating or even after starting when I'm lowish before eating.

I inject at the time of my second meal/snack.
Otherwise you risk hypoing with too much insulin on board from the first meal..

I think you could do it either way. If you take a bit "too much" for meal 1 then just be sure to have meal 2 before you get low. Meal 2 becomes sort of a "correction" for taking too much with meal 1. You gotta be careful that you don't get busy and skip meal 2 though.

I graze. I wouldn’t take insulin for the next meal. I eat bf at 8 am , then I take a little insulin an hour or so later to stop the morning rise. Then between noon and five I eat 2-3 more times. Then dinner. I just take a smaller bolus for a smaller meal. I would definitely hypo if I took enough to cover my next one.

I take very small doses (1/2 unit) so they don’t last anywhere near 4-5 hours. They’re gone in 2-2.5 aomif I don’t inject then I’ll just rise. So I just have a few bites. I make a normal lunch and just eat my way through it from noon -5 every two hours.
