So anyone know roughly how long after taking metformin it should 'show' up in a test, i.e lowered your blood sugars. I am really trying to see what is going on with my bloods, reading this morning was 10.8 @ 7.30am, took my concoction of meds, had some porridge (9.30) tested at 11:00AM and was upto 13.3, i thought i had this under control as my readings were starting to lower down into the low 7's high 6's but has now shot up. I have an appointment to see a doctor tomorrow as suffering with hip/back pain (when i lean over and stand up i get excruciating pain down my hip and in my leg) - but that's not for here, unless that could be affecting my bloods ??

Metformin doesn't have a great effect on bg.

As to your pain that sounds like sciatica and yes, pain like that can effect bg, it certainly affects me like that. Mention it to your gp. Hope you feel better soon.

Metformin does very little to lower blood sugars. It certainly will not stop you spiking after a meal. It doesn't work like that. It helps to reduce the amount of glucose your liver produces and helps with insulin resistance, but all to a very limited extent. It helps overweight people because it is an appetite suppressant. You cannot rely on it to lower your levels. Diet will do that.

Your porridge will have caused that spike after breakfast. All breakfast cereals are high in carbohydrate. Perhaps discard that and try something with less or zero carbs? Eggs are a good choice, cooked any way you like, with perhaps some bacon, mushrooms and a tomato, or just plain.

Your hip and leg pain won't be helping. Pain, injury, illness, can all cause raised levels, but that spike this morning was your porridge.

Do you keep a food diary and record your before and after meal levels alongside? Doing this will show you very quickly which foods are your danger foods, which are OK and which need to be eliminated or taken in much smaller portions.

I have started to keep a diary, I usually have an omelette with bacon for brekkie, ran out of eggs so had some porridge to see what would happen. So is it the gliclazide that's lowers the bg?
