Hubby had cataract op yesterday and was prepped next to diabetic lady, the lady was asked what were your fasting bgs today ?11.5 she told them ,oh thats normal then said nurse, another guy said 4.1 and again thats fine nurse said ,would have been worried in case the man would go hypo mid op and wonder what the nurses are told to accept as ok :?:

Crazy. :***:
I wouldn't be bothered by being on the slightly higher side pre op, but certainly 4.1 seems too close to the mark before an operation.

With the 4.1, it depends what medication they're on. If they were on insulin, sulphonylureas or glinides then a level of 4.1 would be sailing a bit close to the wind. If they're on any other medication or no diabetes meds then hypos shouldn't give them any problems.

I wonder whether they ask to check for any very high levels. High sugar levels could lead to difficulty with healing and could also raise the risk of infection for instance.

For my op I had to be high enough to not go hypo, but not TOO high or I would be refused surgery
