How likely is it I am diabetic?

Hi there

I'm a 30 year old male with a normal bmi. I had a blood test as a general check up at the doctors and he just told me the results. He said I have to go in and get retested as my blood sugar level was high with a reading of 6.8 . This was a blood test that was supposed to be fasted, but I forgot and had a slice of brown toast about 45 minutes before my test. Could this have affected the result?

I have booked another appointment but they can't see me to do the test for another two weeks, so I'm really worried now. How likely do you think it is that I have diabetes?

Thanks

Sam

WE can't diagnose on-line, but 6.8 as a simple blood glucose test not long after eatin a slice of toast isn't high. It would be quite high for a fasting non-diabetic. I'd say "Stop worrying and remember to fast for 12 hours for the next test."

Hana thank you so much for your response, that does go some way to alleviating my blind panic. As I will have to wait so long to get the results, do you think it's worth my buying my own testing kit from the pharmacy?

Hana does not seem to be around so I will reply instead. In my opinion it is too early to think about buying a test meter or worrying unduly.

If I had a slice of toast and tested 45 minutes later then I would not be surprised at getting a reading even higher than 6.8. It is very important to have nothing but water for some hours before your test. My surgery says 14 hours, Hana says ....whatever she said it was and others have other numbers. I have never heard it less than 8 hours.

Your toasty reading, if you had fasted would suggest pre-diabetes and you only need two such readings for a diagnosis so you should be very careful before your next test or possibly tell the surgery staff that the first test should be disregarded.

Thank you very much Squire I really appreciate the advice and it does help to put my mind at rest until the date of my next test. I will make sure I'm super careful and completely fasted for the next one.
