How little insulin is too little?

I also found it weird when I realized 1 unit of novarapid can do so much, especially when I used to take 10+ units for certain meals. It got to a point where I could eat anything and my sugar levels wouldn't spike above 8 as long as I took novarapid 5 - 10 minutes before eating, whereas when I was first diagnosed I was taking 5 units for a similar meal and seeing my sugar levels hit 14 before they eventually came back down to normal. I think the more sensitive you become to insulin the faster it acts.

After reading this thread and a bit online, I thought about cutting out novarapid completely and just using levemir. On a low carb diet, it seems like I never need novarapid unless I eat 40g+ of just protein on its own. I'm also finding that I can take even less levemir than I could novarapid and today I've only taken 2 units of levemir and I'm still having lows before meals. It doesn't really make sense to only take 1 unit of levemir a day, because it seems like such a little amount. Btw, I'm eating about 2000 calories, 99g fat, 30g carb, 240g protein so it isn't like I'm eating tiny amounts.

I'll try 1 unit tomorrow to see if it is too little or not :)

Hi,
It is great to know there are lots of us low insulin users out there!
I have to say l fingers crossed all good and touch wood- l have not had a hypo for weeks now... lm a complete low carber and daily exercise.. if l miss a few days my BS creeps back up. I have no novorapid before meals (unless lm naughty and eat something l should not) and have 5 units of Levemir a day.
Off to Barcelona with the girls tomorrow and going to be really strong and keep up with my eating habits and only have a few too drink- will be very hard though as l will get tired quickly as wont have lots of alcohol etc to pep me up.. maybe a few will be fine. There is a gym and swimming pool so will keep that up. Off to Benicassim the Friday night- 5pm to 5am- so the sleep deprevation and finding the right sort of foods are my only worry- and dont like to be the annyoying out of the group but has to be done! :). I have to say though the daily exercise is so so important! Obviously the low carbing as well but the two combined has helped me no end and lm so much happier and feeling more healthy- even better than before l had diabetes as looking after myself more!! If anyone is scared about doing the exercise lm happy to give lots of tips as l feel like a pro now- do all types of exercise and love it! xx
