How long before I know whether diet control is enough?

Hello All,

I'm newly diagnosed a week ago (T2), and since then have been feeling much better due to altering my diet, as per most reommendations. I am lucky that my partner is a head chef in a care home and has been cooking for diabetics for 20 years.

I only got my BG monitoring kit today, so will start getting to know which foods affect me most.
Questions is, given that 'IF' my diet is good , how long before I can expect healthy BG levels?

I guess using the before and after test, working out which foods increase my BG is the key for now, and modulating them in my diet.

Hi Craig and welcome to the forum You are very lucky with your partner so you shouldn't have too much trouble with diet, and it sounds as though you have understood the basics of testing too. The way your levels will go down is individual - everyone is different so no-one can predict how yours will behave.

In case you haven't already read this since it looks like you have already been reading around the forum, here is the basic information written by the former forum monitors for new members, which I hope will be helpful to you. Ask as many questions as you like as we are all here to help.

Thankyou! I certainly will. Just tested 9.5, 2 hours after an omellette, so hopefully heading the right way

When I was first diagnosed, it took me 12 days of low-carbing to get my levels down from 24.4 mmol/l to less than 7 mmol/l, and an additional 3 days before it stayed there for any period of time. (by low carb I mean <30g a day, although in the first week or so I was struggling to work out exactly what a carb was).

After about a month I could keep my blood constantly in the 5.5 to 6.9 range (with the help of a small dose of Metformin). Getting below 6mmol/l made my head hurt for a few weeks but now I feel fine at less than 5.

I suggest trying your best for the first 3 months, and then see what you HbA1c test shows. Mine was 5.2% and my Doc said if it was similar next time, he'd take me off the Metformin, not that I am in any rush to do that.
