I'm 14 months in and still honeymooning .... my total daily dose is now 10 units of Lantus and approx. 6-8 units of NovoRapid on a "normal" diet with carbs. Without carbs, I can often do without any fast acting. For example, if I have eggs, avocado and salmon for breakfast, I do not need NovoRapid and can maintain my levels between 5 and 7. Same for protein shakes and any other low/zero carb foods.

I do get odd days where my insulin requirements will temporarily increase (especially in hot weather; strangely, this seems to drop my insulin sensitivity rather than increase it as is more common) and when I eat ultra high-carb I definitely need to start plugging lots of NovoRapid.

I feel fortunate that I'm able to control it so well at the moment but at the back of mind I'm always thinking "when will the day come" when everything changes? With tight control is it possible to maintain honeymoon indefinitely or at least extend it significantly?

To answer your questions, the honeymoon period could last a day or it could last for several years. This is an autoimmune disease so it's a matter of how fast your body decides to kill off its bets cells.

As far as extending the honeymoon phase, there aren't any proven methods to extend it. However, there are ways to avoid shortening it- it's probably best to avoid Sulfonylureas like glyclazide if that's your goal (although there is mixed evidence on the subject).

I'm right there with you and for me it's been about 1 year since my first signs of diabetes appeared. It's nice to be so well regulated, but I'm waiting for that specific day when it's no longer this easy.
