How long to take folic acid

Hello all,

Just wanted to know how long we are advised to take the 5mg of folic acid once pregnant? Most websites say until you are 12 weeks. Is this right?

I was told 13 weeks but I asked my OB who said it wasn't crucial to stop exactly then. She said I could take it a little longer if it made me happier, so I took it for a few more weeks. I then reduced it down over a week or two and stopped.
 
I took mine till probably about 16 weeks and that was just to finish the packs I had. My ob said 12 weeks but said just finish the packs X
 
I have enough left for 8 more weeks. I took it until 13 weeks. Just wanted to be sure I'd not stopped too early. X
 
I stopped the higher prescribed dose at my second trimester, but I'm still taking the Pregnacare tablets which contain the standard dose (40mg I think).
