hi,
how low carb should i go ?

i have been on 60g carb's per day for the last 3 day's.
starting to feel quight spaced out on 60g per day.

i am type 2 diabetic.

Hi Tracey,

What do you mean by spaced out? How are your blood glucose levels?
60g is a reasonable level for many people, but how you feel depends on many factors such as what you are used to eating, whether you are on medication etc.

All the best,

fergus

Also low carbing should need an adjustment in medication - according to the sugar levels you are getting. Probably need to discuss this with medics - especially with tablets as it is not so easy to fine tune.

Low carbing between 75 - 120g a day has significantly reduced my blood sugar levels, I am on nova rapid insulin 3 times a day and have gone from an average of 24 units down to 18 units per dose - NOT SUGGESTING ANYONE FOLLOW THIS :!: as it is just me and each person is different but I give figurese just as an example

I am not strict low carbing as it has to fit in with a normal life and what everyone else eats so when, Like last night, i indulge in a few spoons of rice with my pork stir fry then I have to ajust by as much as 4-6 units of insulin

Away staying with friends next week which will mean lots of meals out and take aways - so low carbing will suffer I am sure!! Have you ever tried asking your local chinese takeway how many carbs there are in their dishes

keep a watch on Bg. If it's Well below 4 that's when to do something

Depends what your aims are Tracey. For me, I wanted to lose weight and cut down the insulin as much as possible so I stick to around 40g a day. But if you just want to reduce your bg's and not reduce your medication or anything, you can probably get by on a lot more eg 80-100. I'd test religiously and if you are finding 60g a bit too hard, put it up to say 80g and continue to test. I don't know what medication you're on or even if you're on any at all but if you are you need to factor that in to the equation, less carbs = less medication. My way to get the right meds was to err on the side of underdosing, then add in if my bg's were too high, I'm on metformin and lantus, but that's just my approach and not sure what people only on tablets or on diet alone would do

Hi Tracey,

I am 5 months into being a T2 and found that in the first few weeks (3-4) I had to reduce slowly, down to about 60 carb/day - I could manage on that just fine. However, I had to get there via the path of dropping carbs dramatically in the first week and then again in the second week and found that I felt "funny" so went back up on Carbs and then reduced over a couple of weeks, and that has worked great for me - weight loss around the 3st mark!

I am currently down to 40 carb/day (still loosing weight) and can cope quite well, but it has taken trial and error - and a lot of testing to get here over the first months. I only dropped down to 40 carb/day after my weight plautaued for several weeks. Initially after diagnoses (in my second week) went down to 30-40 carb/day and at that time I could not cope with such a level.

I know that many T2 have been able to cut down dramatically overnight, but others have to find their way a little slower - like me. Seems like my body needed a little time to adjust, but I calculated that I would eat up to 500 carbs/day in the months prior to diagnoses, so no great wonder my body needed adjusting!! hehehehehe

As others have suggested, try go up a little - perhaps 80-100 carb/day and try that out for a week or two and test to see how your Bg is and if fine and you are feeling ok, then try and reduce with just 10 carb/day the following week etc.

Good luck and keep up the good work - like the rest of us, you will find your level with a little paitience.

Best
Alice

Ps. I am a T2 on diet only, if you are on meds for the T2 and/or anything else there will be adjustments to the meds to consider.

60g seems a good starting place, then adjust according to your meter readings. A lot of people find they are more carb sensitive first thing in the morning.
