How Much Insulin Do You Take?

Sorry, I have to ask you where your authority comes from and why it's superior to the University of California's diabetes teaching hospital.

I suspect that you are misinterpreting the advice on how the formula should be used.

First of all check the source of the information from the U of Cal and confirm if they are claiming (like you are) that this formula is normative through the lifetime of a diabetic, or if in fact they are saying (like I am) that these are starting points for the beginning of treatment, when there is no other data to go on, that must then change based on actual experience.

If the authority claims to be normative for a diabetic's lifetime, then let's talk.

I usually take around 100u a day including basal, I take 74u of basal a day.

I take 10 Lantus in the morning, 5 at night.
Then 3 Novorapid for brekkie, 1 for lunch unless I'm high and need a correction. I tend to eat the same each day.
Dinner completely depends on what we eat, that is different every day.
Usually 1-5.
This is vastly down on last year when it was 24 Lantus, 8,8 and 16 Novorapid

In pumping insulin (and most people use a little less on a pump), John Walsh suggests for a person of 73kg a starting TDD for T2 would be about 7-18U, starting TDD for T1, 22-29 (both in the side of safety) then all averages physically fit; 33u, moderately active;40u, sedentary or adolescent 50u. There are higher doses for those in the second two/thirds of pregnancy and for severe stress and if people have DKA, infections or are taking steroids he says it could be between 80 and 140u.

(and then insulin resistance and how much of your own insulin is still being produced plays a big part)
So huge variation.

I take 30 units of lantus in the evenings and around 6-8 units humalog at each meal.

Thats great info, I will work my averages out over the next week for statistics.. Just would be great to see from real life people what their averages are for a week etc.. Mine vary from work days to time off, so I am going to get an average now...

Would be good to see whether the majority are 50 50 ir 40. 60 or 60 40 etc.. Some seem to vary way outside these parameters.. But why? Are they on meds such as a statin or anti depressant or excess/under weight etc.
I would love forum to get info like this for the future...

My recent basal/bolus ratios (in blue):

Basal seems to vary from 10-14 (but mostly it's 12) and then there are times like today when I woke up high and have had to take bolus corrections for no obvious reason
