Hi all
I've been registered here for a few years but this is actually my first post ... Lol

How reliable are specsavers for eye screening?
Reason I'm asking is in 2012 my results came back as showing Retinopathy but last two years 2013 and this year my results have come back normal?
Is this normal for one year to have Retinopathy and the next 2 years got it to come back normal?
But my eyes sting and water and I have a lot of floaters most of the time and my eye sights not that good really
I was at a pre assesment for an operation a few months ago and was explaining to the nurse and the first thing she said was is it Specsavers by any chance? So I do wonder really how reliable they are at doing diabetic screening? Anyone else get there eyes screened there? And had any problems with them?
I live in a new area and specsavers is the only place I know that does eye screening
Thanks all xx

Bullies.
Hi Trickytish

You might want to check with your GP to see if any other arrangements are made for diabetic eye screening in your area. In my area, the screening is done at a local health centre.

Ah thanks that does sound like a better idea rather than Specsavers

Only thing is when I get the letter through to make my appointment it only as opticians as places to go nothing like a clinic at the local hospital or anything very strange really as prior to this before I moved here it was allways done at my local hospital
Specsavers is the only one that I know where it is too .. Lol all the other opticians are like out of town in areas that I don't know
Thanks tho I'll ask my GP tho xx

I used to go to Specsavers, always seeing a different person in there each year. Then I changed to an individual optician as my sister took a job there. The optician spotted changes in my eyes and ensured I was referred on for proper diabetic retinal screening which is done by a specialist. The letter came back at the start of last year that I had proliferative retinopathy. When I then seen the specialist he told me that if my eyes continued untreated I would be blind within a year. Almost a year and a half on and several laser sessions since, I'm so glad I left the big chain opticians, it saved my eyesight!

Background retinopathy can disappear so it might just be your one of the lucky ones.

As for Specsavers, I find they offer an excellent service but can't say how good their retinal screening service is like, however you should follow Doug's suggestion and discuss this with your gp.

Specsavers.... hmmmm!!!

Messed up my prescription following cataract surgery and was using wrong prescription for 4 years.
Not noticed until I asked why I needed glasses for distance in the eye that had an artificial lens for distance!

Specsavers are a big company with a lot of patients. Mistakes are made.

I now use an independent optician for eye tests and local health authority for retinal screenings.

I had always used vision express until this week when after the return of my glasses twice for the verifocals being well and truly out I said no more and asked for my money back.

In some areas the NHS have contracted chains of opticians to do their retinal screening. In my area you either go to the diabetes unit or they bring a mobile set up to certain GP practices.
