How to diet whilst on medication (Glucoside & Metformin)

Hi All, my name is Aaron and my mother has been on type 2 diabetes for over 10 years.

She is taking glucoside and metformin medicine to help control her sugar levels.

There was one stage where mum was really obese and it has taken a lot of encouragement for her to lose weight. 3 years ago she had a massive weight loss and the doctors has reduced her medicine.

For the last two years her diet has been up and down. Even though her general health has been good (cholestrol, blood presure etc...) her diabetes is pretty much the same.

Everytime when she goes back on a diet she always get quite dizzy throughout the day but mainly towards end of night (around 3 hours after dinner). She would then have a cup of hot milk and a banana just to remove the dizzyness. I am assuming that the reason why she gets dizzy is because she is eating less throughout the day and the medicine is too strong for her. We tried seeing the GP and asking him to reduce her dosage but he refuses to do it because he knows my mum doesnt stick to her diet properly.

I am at a tough stage atm.. i really want my mum to lose weight and possibly reverse her diabetes but I am not too sure whether we are doing it right or not.

Her daily diet is like this:

Morning: Poridge
Lunch: A piece of meat (like a pork chop), green salad and one slice of brown bread
Dinner: Meat and vegetables
Late Snack (to help her dizzyness): A cup of skimmed hot chocolate (unsweetened) and a banana

I know this diet does work if she sticks to it, but i am just concerned about her dizziness.

am i pushing my mum too hard?!

Thanks

Aaron

What amounts of medication does your mother take?

Doug
