How to get energy before a long run etc?

Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance or laziness (!) if this has been answered before.

I am going to try low carb again, but before a heavy gym session or a long run (10 miles +) how do I ensure my levels dont drop too low during exercise?

Currently if my sugars are around 8-10 prior to exercise, I will have a 250ml energy drink immediately before and also take in slowly another 250ml from 40-60 minutes into exercise.

When I finish I would hope my sugars would be around 6. I hope this makes sense? Would I still have to do this if i went 'full' low carb? Is there another way, what am I missing please?

Thanks
Michael

It would be helpful if you could tell members what type of Diabetes you have and what medications, if any, you are on.

If you are T2 then Prof. Tim Noakes has some useful lectures on YouTube. Welcome to the forum, you are in great company.

Remember it takes at least a few weeks for our bodies to get used to low carb before with have as much physical energy as before. Having carbs before a run or the gym stops the adaptation process.

Thanks for the reply, and sorry!

Type 1, insulin controlled.
There are quite a few members with T1 who are heavily into sports, no doubt some will reply soon. Good luck.

I’ve heard a cup of white rice after workouts wont kick you out of Ketosis but the carbs will be absorbed to replenish muscles. Not sure before workouts though
