How to monitor fasting BS?

When is the best time to test fasting BS? How many hrs after dinner should I test the fasting BS? Should I do it first thing in the morning after I get up? or should I do it 1-2 hrs after getting up?

I usually have late dinner around 9pm, go to bed at 11-11:30pm and wake up at 7am. I test around 7:30am. My fasting BS always been quite high, 8-9.

Usually after fasting at least 8 hours (i.e. only water). For most the obvious convenient time is immediately on getting up, and before showering as this can raise BG a bit.

An overnight fasting bg should start 4 hours after your last meal. I have my last meal at 18:00, then test at 22:00 and every two hours after till 6:00 am that then gives me my fast results for over night.
 
A fasting test should be done after at least 8 hours of fasting, preferably longer, (otherwise you aren't fasting). Also it should be done before you start pottering about after getting up. In my case, the fast is over 12 hours but I do test immediately I get up.
