As the topic heading suggests has anyone got any tips for that sweet tooth craving which I seem to have all the time!

Occasionally I will have a few pieces of chocolate after a meal or sometimes some Sugar Free Angel Delight, Sugar free Jelly but wondered what other tasty treats others might indulge in!

It is devastating to know you've got a disease for life. We talk about "sweet tooth" but is it a real craving, or is there a "boredom factor?" We snack because its easy, & social, like smoking used to be.

Changes to diet are forced on us. It will be beneficial to all the family to adopt the same diet. I used to eat significant quantities of biscuits. Now I keep a Quality Street tin full of nuts. Fruit - NOT fruit juices - is also a good idea. You can make desserts from gelatine, custard powder, etc, sweetened with saccharin or other non-sugar sweeteners - NOT fruit sugar. No-added-sugar squashes added to gelatine or vegegel make acceptable jellies, & drained tinned fruit can be chopped & added. I do occasionally have one spicy oat cake (Nairn's biscuits) - 6.5 g carb. A 1 cm cube of cheese can also meet the craving for a sweet.

I have a daily total of 100-130 carbs & can keep physically active. I just cut out most of the carbs with my main meals & increase the veg & protein.

My daughter-in-law kindly provides me with a "diabetic" Christmas package each year - diabetic chocolate, jam, jelly. etc. These take a very long time to eat, as the diabetic sweeteners are effective laxatives & all carbohydrate ingredients are digested to blood sugar. I wish she wouldn't, but I wouldn't offend such kindly thoughts & actions. Diabetic foods are not recommended by any diabetics.

Thanks for some of those suggestions Ian, never thought about the cheese cubes!!

I've never had a go at making my own jellies either and they may taste nicer than some of the shop bought ones.

I love the Nairns ginger oatcakes and the mini plain ones (2.3 g each) are nice topped with cheese. I have also made wholemeal fairy cakes ( which are about 9g) or my latest attempt flapjacks which work out at 8g each small slice (but are a bit fiddly to slice up) after a meal. Or strawberrys with light cream (occasionally with an ameretti biscuit crushed and sprinkled on top as a treat!). I am rather new at this and am trying to find as many suitable options as possible so I don't get bored. I have twice tried different brownie recipes but they both camne out like sawdust despite shortening the cooking time - a rather disappointing waste of green and blacks!
