As some of you might be aware I am on a mission to try and reduce my blood sugars!!

I'm aware that I can't follow a low carb diet due to having 1 kidney and being told I shouldn't have excess amounts of protein but if I make the following changes to my diet will it help?

1 - Avoid the porridge oats + cereals and swap to a homemade muesli with a few oats in, nuts, seeds - don't suppose I can have any dried fruit?

2 - Maybe have eggs with half a slice of bread?

3 - Ditch the rolls/pitta breads at lunch time and have salads, homemade soups instead

4 - For evening meals I still love spag bol so could I still have 2 tbsp of cooked pasta and sauce, or fish + veg, grilled meats and veg and maybe 1tbsp of cooked rice or 1 potato.

Any chance a couple of squares of choclate might remain on the menu

Hi, Fiona35

Y'know that all sounds pretty spot on. Not as draconian a restriction as the low-carb jihad crowd that I hang about with, but a **** sight better than anything the majority of health professionals are likely to suggest. I found personally that it was better for me just to accept that pasta and bread was off the menu from now on, but that's my own experience.I think if you give your menu a go you'll see big improvements in your bs readings.
They may be enough to get you into non-diabetic territory, which is the ultimate aim of course. If not, you may only need small adjustments to get you there.
If you need a chocolate fix, your best bet is to try the 70-85% cocoa bars, which are far lower in carbs than you might expect (85% is approx. 14g carb per 100g).
Good luck with it.

All the best,

Hi Fergus

As my HBA1C'S recently have been 8.4 and 8.2 I presume that rather than following the high carb low fat diet previously recommended to me and switching to a slightly lower carb I will reduce my HBA1C but not sure what you mean by Non Diabetic terriotory, would that mean I wasn't diabetic anymore? As you can tell I'm a bit thick!!

Thanks

Fiona

Hi Fiona,

You're not thick in the slightest, I'm not falling for that one! You've completely understood the logic of the low-carb argument, which puts you a step ahead of a couple of doctors I know!
By non-diabetic territory I meant stable blood sugar levels in a non diabetic range i.e. never above 8mmol/l and pretty consistently in a range between 4.5 and 5.5mmol/l. The HbA1c equivalent would be somewhere around 5%. That's the ultimate target, and by no means unachievable.
Now that's not the same thing as not being diabetic at all. There is as yet no such thing as a cure, so in it's place we have to use diet, exercise and medication to get those numbers. Diet and exercise for sure, and as little medication as possible.

All the best,

fergus
