I keep a few small tins of boned and skinned salmon in the cupboard for situations like this, zero carbs and two hundred calories.

Re: HUNGERY SCARED TO EAT

Hi sandysan,

I'm obese, diagnosed with Type 2 in February this year, and I've lost 10kgs (stone and a half) without going hungry since diagnosis. Also reduced my hba1c from 128 to 63, and my fasting blood glucose from over 28 to on average 6.2

I follow a low glycemic load diet. I started out by cutting out ALL white carbs - flour, sugar, pasta, bread, rice, potatoes - and cutting down drastically on fruit. Instead I ate meat, fish, cheese, eggs, vegetables, nuts. I indulged my sweet tooth with 70% cocoa solids dark chocolate, or with berries (strawberries, raspberries) with thick cream. Now, 8 months later, I find I can eat a small quantity of potato (say one handfull of oven chips), as long as its with plenty of protein and fats, without upsetting my BGs too much.

I would suggest that you cut out the carb for a short while and see how you go, one of the bad things that carbs do is make your BGs yoyo up and down, and that will only make you feel hungrier. White carbs are absorbed into the body very quickly so your body responds by trying to produce a lot of insulin. Your insulin and your meds will try to bring your BGs down rapidly, BUT the bad thing is that when your BGs drop so quick the body automatically panics and sends messages saying "I'm hungry - now!!!" Protein fills you up without causing the yoyo "I'm stuffed.... I'm hungry...." cycle.

Try an omelette for breakfast, or bacon and eggs. Snack on nuts, or cheese with celery sticks. If you're feeling adventurous and love cooking, look up recipes on the net that use ground almonds or coconut instead of flour and make low carb baked goods. I had banana choc chip muffins today - coconut flour instead of wheat flour, and I use erythritol and stevia instead of sugar. Low carb and low calorie compared to ordinary muffins, and my BG hardly moves. I got fed up of diet coke drinks though, and was close to dispair until I discovered that sodastream do a nice selection of diet syrups - now I can have my ginger beer or fruity pop again.

Like quite a few T2s my diabetes is genetic - I have an aunt who is diabetic as are her 2 children (all T2 with onset in their 40's), and other members of my mother's side of the family have it too. My doctor says that my obesity is because of my T2, not the cause of it, and I'm steadily and healthily losing the weight now, even though I've been on gliclazide since diagnosis.

YMMV of course, no 2 people respond exactly the same, and the most important thing is to figure out what works for you, but keep reading the forum. There's so much help and advice here, as well as shoulders to cry on! Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Sandysan, you are a few weeks diagnosed, & diabetes complications takes years to develop. You didn't get to 17 stone in a few weeks, so you need to take a longer view. I suggest you try a consistent approach to dieting over a matter of weeks to see howconcentrating on a single diet system affects your blood glucose, weight well-being & perceived health problems.

The experience of many of us (including the advice Anna issues to newcomers) is that a low carb, increased fat diet is the way to go. I would STRONGLY recommend NUTS as a substantial component of your diet - replace your porridge oats with ground almonds & coconut flour/desiccated. Eat brazil nuts & almonds (not cashew or peanuts) or a piece of fullfat cheese if you need a snack. We are all conditioned to be afraid of fats. That is WRONG - we need fats, & fats are sustaining, provide double the energy of carbs & unlike carbs to not metabolise to sugar or deposit as body fat.

Hope the helps. I've been 5 1/2 years of low carb, increased fat & am well & active at 74.

hi denise

I have had a look at that site and im shocked at the fat u can eat ... it seems unbelievable and altho id like to try it I am scared to try it ,, incase I put on weight ,, im obese now , surely eating butter , full fat milk ,, full fat cheese , is not good for the cholestral ,,.im not to up on the fats side of it yet , I am just starting to understand what low carbs and GI are . I need to loose a lot of weight.. at the moment im trying a low carb diet and protein , lean meats ect ,, but yes im getting hungry , I am now having a omelette and chicken for my supper

so I guess I will have to do a bit of research on the fat side of things

Re: HUNGERY SCARED TO EAT

Sorry have to jump in here date of diagnosis has no relevance to complications . I was only diagnose just under 2 months ago . I have stage 2 kideney disease and damage, I seem to have indication of liver dammage (what ever that means) I have a small amount of neuropathy. And I still have to have some other things checked out yet . The fact is diabetes is often not picked up till quite long down the road of having it . It turns out no one knows exactly how long I have had it but it could be years . So saying you wont have them yet coz your only juet diagnosed is not really right . But sandy you are relatively ok with some fat but not with the carbs and as for saying about ice cream it is full of sugar . At the moment fat is not your enemy carbs and sugar is I have been eating high fat low carb since diagnosis and have lost over a stone . And brought my bgs down froom dangerously high to only moderatly high if not nearly ok . If you starve yourself you could start with depression. And besides a very hungry person finds it harder to controll their intake. Also eat before going shopping just will make better dississions on what to buy.

hi wompa .sorry to hear about the liver , does it renew itself ?? after a time , ?
were you prediabetic ? before diagnosed as full diabetic, I was pre diabetic for 2 years, im not on any meds ,at the moment , and I tend to agree with you about the fats , im going to have to look for other foods to eat as the food im eating im starting to get bored of I have eat that much chicken and eggs I have gone off it hahahah

but thanks guys it has been very helpful , so for now I think like wompa says the carbs are most important right now , just had a weigh in here 16st 12 from 18stone in 4 weeks ,,,, still have a very long way to go for weight loss , bs are averaging around 5.5 woke up this morning was 6.0

I do eat porridge of a morning but I find that 2 hours after my porridge I think I can cope with it brown wholemeal bread that makes my bs go high , and a simple dark ryvita also makes my bs go high ,,
I am struggling with what to eat , but swings and roundabouts

when I was obese and hungry all the time, my GP suggested slimming world everytime I asked for weight control meds. guess what. I am never hugry anymore, plenty of good advice on hand from web and consultant, the best thing after a year I am now 2.5 stone lighter, 2 to go till i'm ideal weight but there have been many blips along the way, so if you want give it a go nothing to loose only weight and hunger, good luck to anyone that goes for it

is homemade vegetable soup ok ,, cabbage, tin toms , leaks , onions, parsnips, carrots, pearl barley, lentils, onions, mushrooms. beef stock cubes , oxos. and tin of oxtail soup , I made a huge big pot full , and wondering if I can eat it freely when I am hungry ,?

Yes - you can add grated cheese, ground almonds, cream to it when you serve.

I'd avoid the parsnips and carrots. Pulses can be dodgy too, have you got a meter so you can test after eating?

I eat oatcakes when snacking and it takes very few to satisfy your appetite! Reputedly, they have a good GI

If you want to lose weight and are worried about cholesterol as well then veg is the way forwards.
I was 17 stone also and i lost it at a 2.2 pounds a week by eating mainly veg and fish and a big breakfast of oats and yoghurt and nuts and fruit. Its about calories. I reduced mine to 1200 a day and kept to this. now i am 11 stone gone from 40 inch waist to 32.
BUT you need to exercise also. I walked everyday. You need motivation to make it work. I had a heart attack and I was brought back 4 times and that gave me the motivation I needed. If you need motivation just follow my advice "Don't think it wont happen to you" I used to think that then one day it did happen to me. Also eating like this and exercising will bring your diabetes under control. If you get hungry eat some veg. If you don't like veg then learn to like them. When you have the right motivation it can be done. Find a reason to make it happen not lots of reason why you cant do it.

I really think getting rid of the bad carbs and only eating good ones in a low carb diet is the way to get better control of your diabetes. I had a shock in June when my blood test. Had gone up from 5.8 to 6.9. Doctor wanted to change my tablets but I got him to agree to let me try and change it myself so I went low card everything fresh no processed or ready made meals and I have never felt better not hungry and have even lost weight which I did not set out to do as was not overweight . Hoping my next blood test in December will show results as well
