SWMBO has had T1 since 16. (Now 43) I have been her full time carer for 16 years due to various other ailments causing insulin resistance, among other things. Just started on pump therapy last November and all was going well until recently. Night hypo's for no reason at all. BM stays low all night without any insulin being pumped. Lasts for about two weeks until menstruation starts then everything is fine. I think it’s hormonal due to the approach of menopause. Anyone else had any similar experiences?

My wife's Endocrinologist has had four guesses and four different theories and four different remedies, none of which have worked. I must point out however that she also has liver disease which causes problems as well as polycystic ovary syndrome which also causes insulin resistance along with a handful of ailments like asthma, thyroid problems etc.

The low BM lasts about twelve hours. Her pump is removed in the first hour so no insulin is being injected at all. During the night she has to consume almost a litre of lucozade just to keep her BM above hypo level. It nearly always happens at night but can happen during the day if she has a nap. So it only starts when asleep or lying down???

All of our doctors are puzzled and can't seem to give any helpful suggestions.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

hello cybertrix,

The first suggestion I can make is Adrenal insufficiency due to
failing adrenal glands (Addison's Disease).
This would certainly cause hypoglycemia, but I'm not sure if it would be limited
to hours of sleep or when resting.

My second wild stab in the dark would be to suggest your wife's liver disease
was in some way affecting production of glucose by the liver.
This would affect blood sugar levels and would be linked to some extent on
her sleep patterns.

the very best of luck,
timo.
