Can someone with hyperglycemia suffer from a hypo? I know Hyper refers to too high of sugar levels and Hypo is too low of sugar levels but is it possible to go from Hyper to Hypo?

Not on insulin myself but I would expect that the answer is yes. For example if you inject too much insulin for the amount of food you eat.eg injecting and then skipping meal. I understand that people may swing between hypo and hyper and vice versa if they try to take corrective action for one and miss their mark.

I am sure someone with more relevant experience will be along soon.

Thankyou pavlosn, I am only being put on medication next week, but my BS dropped from 20s to 5s yesterday within the space of 3 hours roughly. Just trying to get as much info so I can keep myself healthy

Ask as many questions as you need to. The objective should be to feel confident about what needs to be done going forward. There are a lot of very experienced, well controlled diabetics on this forum and they are more than happy to share the benefit of their experience.

That is quite a drop from what was seems a very high peak. Do you know what you did to get so high, what was your meal before that.

I also note from reading the post on a separate thread that you suffer from a separate condition to do with your bones. I wonder whether any medication you are taking for that (steroids?) is playing up with your sugar levels. You may like to read the instruction leaflet that comes with the medication for their suitability for diabetics and/or discuss with your doctor when you see him.

All the best.

Breakfast was to blame ,I had porridge :( moved onto a very nut based museli today and feel so much better. Thanks for the bit about other medication, I am not on steriods but its worth checking if my meds are a contributing factor.

Im taking 300mg Quinnine at night, 35mg Amitryptiline at night and upto 900mg gabapentin daily

This is what ive found

Quinine -
  • If you have diabetes you may need to check your blood glucose more frequently, as these tablets may affect the levels of sugar in your blood. Your doctor will be able to advise you about this.
Amitryptiline -
  • If you have diabetes you may need to check your blood glucose more frequently. This is because amitriptyline can alter the levels of sugar in your blood. Your doctor will advise you about this.

At least they do not state that you should not take if diabetic. It does sound like you need to at least ask about the issue when you see your doctor next.
Hopefully someone with experience of this drugs may be able to advise further.
