Hyperparathyroid and hypercalcaemia

I don't personally but my sister had the surgery many years ago. It went well and they even removed a mole that was close to the incision. She wore a light scarf around her neck until she healed as otherwise some people would stare but she healed well and had minimal scarring. Good luck with the surgery, I'm sure it will go well

I had parathyroid surgery last year on January 4th. One of the four glands was removed. It was day surgery, and pretty uneventful. The scar on my neck is completely gone, and I have to look very careful to find it. I was fully OK within a week.

My PTH score is still higher than normal, but according to my endocrinologist it is because I also have CKD. My calcium score is now well within the normal range. I also am taking 3000 units of Vitamin D3 daily since the surgery.

Before the surgery, I was not even aware one has parathyroid glands. I am also intrigued as to the fact one has 4.

Good luck with the surgery.

Thank you @Laineybod and @jape for the info.
Can I ask about managing symptoms before surgery? I have been having bone pain, not joint pain, but deep pain in long bonesand spine, for a few years now. Also periods of nausea and abdominal pain, and oh so fatigued despite sleeping well.
Kidney function fine. Had vit D levels way too high due to prescribed suplements which were discontinued early this year. Kidney function, blood pressure all fine, low folate, levels, though. Strangely my HbA1c is better than it has been for a while. I have gained weight, and been inactive having broken bones in a fall a few months ago.

It is the thought of waiting for more scans before a surgery plan is produced, and trying to get on with life while I am so uncomfortable that I find daunting.

Edit to add: I seem to have much less patience than usual, which is aparently also a symptom .

I did not have any symptoms at all - it all just showed in my blood work: high PTH and high calcium scores. NO bone pain at all.

The same with my CKD. If the blood work did not say so, I would be completely unaware of my kidneys being compromised.

Thank you, @jape. I am sorry you had kidney damage. It is a comfort to know you recovered from the surgery quickly, though.

I have had the bone pain symptoms for five years. It has been explained by the endocrinology consultant that is due to the parathyroid hormone affecting the amount of calcium circulating in the blood. This in turn causes the bones to release calcium into the blood. It can cause deposits of calcium in the vascular system, and the kidneys and heart can suffer. Apparently, the surgery to remove the defective parathyroid is a cure. Though I am uncertain whether or not damage from too much calcium circulating can be reversed.

It was actually my sister breaking her finger when taking the dog for a walk that got her to the doctor and to find out her kidneys had failed, once she was stable they could do the parathyroid surgery which did make her feel better. We used to joke that the calcium was leeching out of her bones and going to her nails as she had the strongest nails on anyone I have ever met. I remember she got a lot of foot pain but I'm not sure which of the many issues she had caused that. She healed well from what I can remember (it was over 20 years ago and she has since died so I can't ask her).

The positive is that if the damage cannot be reversed, at least the problem will not deteriorate any further.

I recently broke several bones, after a simple fall. I don’t have osteoporosis, though.
My diagnosis was made by a young , newly qualified, locum GP doctor, following investigations for abdominal pains . Thst was over a year ago, and I have had to wait to see endocrinology surgeon. Who confirmed the diagnosis. Now I am waiting for nuclear medicine scans to enable her to see 4D images. Then at least another 4 months after scans to wait for surgery. In the meantime calcium levels are checked monthly, and if they are too high I need infusions to flush the bloodstream of the excess.

Just a bit impatient and appreciate being able to sound off here, and get your insights. Thanks folks.
