Have you been told about correction doses yet? Ask your DSN about these, if they haven't told you yet they probably will do soon, they avoid overloading you with info at the first appointment, or else there's too much to remember all at once! High blood sugar is treated with insulin and drinking lots, but not if you have significant amounts of ketones then you need to go to hospital. You family don't really need to know how to treat high blood sugar, either you are able to do it yourself or its got so bad you need to be in hospital. Has your DSN told you about what to do when you are ill eg keep an eye on blood sugar?
What was you blood sugar when you had a hypo? I was just thinking that if your blood sugars are high all the time like you said, you might get 'false hypos' at readings of 4+ where it feels like a hypo because your body is used to higher blood sugar levels.
Actually you said you are on 2 injections a day, so I assume a mixed insulin? I don't know what you do about correction doses then, but your DSN should be able to help.
I'd also ask you DSN why you are on mixed insulin (if you are), from what they told me it seems an incredibly inflexible regime, I couldn't see how it could ever work for me. The other option is 1 dose of long acting insulin per day + 3 doses short acting one per meal.
