ok i know this may seem like a really daft question.................
i have only just been diagnosed with type 1 and my brain is still struggling to take it all in
I had my first hypo last nyt and managed to treat it well but my problem is im generally constantly above 10 at the moment. I have changed my morning dosage to 12 and kept my evening dose at 8.
Well my biggest problem with all this is i keep getting asked by my family as to how to treat a hyper and.........well..........i honestly dont know
Could someone please help!!!! :(

Have you been told about correction doses yet? Ask your DSN about these, if they haven't told you yet they probably will do soon, they avoid overloading you with info at the first appointment, or else there's too much to remember all at once! High blood sugar is treated with insulin and drinking lots, but not if you have significant amounts of ketones then you need to go to hospital. You family don't really need to know how to treat high blood sugar, either you are able to do it yourself or its got so bad you need to be in hospital. Has your DSN told you about what to do when you are ill eg keep an eye on blood sugar?

What was you blood sugar when you had a hypo? I was just thinking that if your blood sugars are high all the time like you said, you might get 'false hypos' at readings of 4+ where it feels like a hypo because your body is used to higher blood sugar levels.

Actually you said you are on 2 injections a day, so I assume a mixed insulin? I don't know what you do about correction doses then, but your DSN should be able to help.

I'd also ask you DSN why you are on mixed insulin (if you are), from what they told me it seems an incredibly inflexible regime, I couldn't see how it could ever work for me. The other option is 1 dose of long acting insulin per day + 3 doses short acting one per meal.

Hi,

Welcome to becoming a T1 and if you are worried /scared please don't be. I was diagnosed 11 months ago and was terrified. I struggled initially when on 2 injections a day. In the end after researching this site it appeared that the people with the best control were on 4 injections a day.

I then TOLD my specialist that this is what I wanted to do and since then my control has been brilliant. It's all trial and error initially but once you get used to knowing how much insulin to take for what you eat it becomes a doddle (did for me anyway).

When I was on the 2 injections a day there was nothing I could do to bring my levels down after lunch...morning and evening was fine but lunch was never back into single figures.

I would recommend going onto the 4 injection regime (which is one long lasting insulin and then an injection with each meal). It initally worried me due ot having to inject at work and more frequently but wish I did it from day one looking back).

By the way I am just a T1 and not an expert so please seek advice from a specialist too.

JC

Thank you for the info
I thought i was being dense when asked about hypers and treating them and i couldnt answer! :?
I just could not remember what my DSN had told me!
I completly agree about the frequency of dosage, i just agreed to the two a day because i was so in shock when i was told and really could not get my head around the thought of injecting four times a day.
My blood sugars were down at 5 when i had my hypo but like you said HLW, it felt worse because my body is so used to my levels being so high.
i have already done a correction dose in my morning injection from 10 to 12 a few days ago but my middle levels are still too high so i think i will need to increase my injections to 14 in the morning and keep the 8 at night as my late evenings and morning levels are really good.
Thank you guys for making me feel so welcome and helping me with my worries
:D
