Hyperthyroidism

My son has recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism after having type 1 diabetes for 11 years. Has anyone handled hyperthyroidism in a way other than taking radioactive iodine tablets or having their thyroid removed?

I had to end up taking the radio iodene tablet as my thyroid wasn't responding to the meds, now on Thyroxine tablets

I used to take Neo-Mercazole tablets , now my thyroid is under active instead.

Sorry to hear this, @Lindsay McMenamin .

I was diagnosed with Graves' thyrotoxicosis in 2001 which had remained undiagnosed for so long that I became dramatically and frighteningly poorly.

There are ways of treating it with medication, I gather. For instance, I was put on to carbimazole for the hyperthyroid, along with a beta blocker for my racing heart, but I did then have to have the radioiodine capsule and am now on 175mcg thyroxine daily (which is no biggie, but it does need regular monitoring and occasional dose adjustments).

My condition had been going on for over a year before it was picked up and I was treated. Had it been picked up before I feel there would have been more options available, but as things stood I did need zapping in the nuclear medicine department.

Hugs to you and your son. Glad they've spotted his hyperthyroid, and I wish him all the best with his treatment.

Love Snapsy
:)
