hypo at work

No they can't give you a written warning for an hypo...

Don't hand in your notice, ask to work with the occupational therapy to see in which ways you can work within your job to make things safer etc.. Or perhaps asked to be moved to an area/duties that pose less of a problem if you suffer an hypo..

Your company under the DDA have a duty to look at your work duties, envirnoment and see what reasonable adjustments can be made, such a altering your duties, moving you to a different department etc etc..

If you belong to a union speak to your rep..

Don't act rashly think about your actions and the impact of them before you hand in your notice.

I realise you must be feeling very low, because of the hypo and the w.warning.

DON'T just go handing in your notice.......

1) Did your Employers know that you are diabetic?

2) Have you got a written contract?

3) Have you got a Union?

4) Have you got legal advice on household insurance or such like?

5) If you have a handbook, does it state anywhere on the procedures for giving warnings?

6) Were you given a letter telling you that you have a disciplinary interview to discuss Fridays Interview?

7) Did they just give you a warning without a proper interview and did they suspend it and then recall you back after they had given it some thought?

8) Were you already on a verbal warning?

9) Have you been given written details of the outcome and how to appeal against the decision?

Lots of questions, BUT I really advise that YOU DO NOT just go and hand in your notice......please until all facts are known...it is not easy to make a judgement on this....BUT DO NOT just give in....

Have you had hypo's at work previously?

It would be harsh to penalise somebody for hypo at work, but with any Warnings etc, the procedures and policies have to be published..

However, the Employer should also be aware of the person's diabetes and possibilitys of hypo's if working a lathe.

It isn't all clear cut, as to say a definite 'no'.....

Look at it this way if you had a heart attack at work would you expect a written warning delivered to your hospital bed? NO

Diabetes is no different in principle you had an hypo attack and as such it was an emergency.

Go in tell them its not on. You want to see occupational health and discuss your medical needs. If thats a problem then your already going to on the right track for them to get shafted so to speak.

Without knowing what has went on before this latest development it is difficult to comment, but you are covered by DDA and I advise you to contact your Union or Citizens Advice regarding this matter, what ever you do don't hand your notice in.

Hi,

T1's are covered by the Disability Discrimination Act so get in touch with your union (if you have one). I do know they have to allow you reasonable break times for snacks and an insulin break (if you have to do it at a certain time every day). Take a look at www.direct.gov.uk as well for some information.

Providing that the Application form was filled out telling them about diabetes if it was asked as a question, and providing the Employer is aware...they can't be held liable under the DDA if they are not aware of the diabetes in the first place.....no mention in original posting whether Employer was aware or not. I know of one type 1 person that has not told their employer...

Let us know how you've got on with your problem at work. I'm taking my employer to an employment tribunal on grounds similar to yours - manager's treatment of me while i had a hypo.

Start reading up on disability discrimination and reasonable adjustments etc. You'll find out that you are protected from interference and negative treatment on grounds of disability.

Hopefully you've taken some of the good advice people on here have given.
