Hi, hope everyone's ok
I've worked for a local charity for 11 years. I've been a type 1 for 11 years and 2 weeks. I have also had severe depression causing unusual behaviour which I'm now recovered from.
The charity I work for asked me to do some lone working (sharing a hotel room alone with a vulnerable adult. In my other job in a large utility company I have an off the shelf risk assessment stopping me from lone working. I started that job 5 years ago. I gave problems with losing hypo systems. My employers at the charity are well aware of this as I've had bad hypos with them. I did not know about the lone working until a few hours before arriving at the hotel. When I mentioned my concerns about lone working I was told by the manager 'that it was fine' as she was in the hotel room next to me.
As you've probably guessed I had a massive hypo. I left the vulnerable adult alone in the hotel room while I looked for help. I had glucose with me but in my low glucose state I didn't think to take it. This was an unusual situation as we're never working alone.
The charity has now taken all the responsibilities from me. For example I have to be constantly under the eye if the manager instead of just the normal group of staff I work with. I have never seen my diabetes as a 'disability' however I now feel it has made me completely incapable. Does any one have any advice for situations like this?
