Hypo - end of busy day

Now I'm on a pump and use a Libre I am usually able to treat a hypo with one or two Glucotabs and by turning my pump's basal rate down.

Yesterday evening I had the worst hypo I'd had for years. I know why. I'm kicking myself.

I'd done Parkrun in the morning, cycled to the pub for lunch, had two pints of shandy, ham, eggs and veg followed by cheese, no insulin, cycled home, corrected with a bit of insulin en route, spent two hours in the kitchen doing food prep for the week, had ham and salad for supper, then started on the ironing.....

I massively fell out with a pair of jeans. They refused to be ironed. They just would NOT conform to my demands to lie still. Nothing made sense.

I melted onto the sofa in a pool of sweat. My Libre said LO. It's only ever said that when I had a broken sensor. Treated it with 4 Glucotabs, turned my pump off. 3 more Glucotabs 20 mins later. 2.1 blood. 2.0 blood. Libre insisted on LO. I insisted it was broken. Mr S said no, just too low to register, at which point I dug out some Glucogel.

20 minutes later I was 3.3 on the Libre.

The sofa is still damp this morning. And I'm 10.2. Which has annoyed me - but at the same time I'm grateful.

Shame I have to got to work today as I could have done with a Sunday lie-in after all that!

I'll be more careful with looking out for delayed-reaction exercise hypos and alcohol at lunchtime in future!

:)

It happens. Luckily you are managing to mainly avoid them and you have some top tips for the future! Take it easy today. Hug.

Hi @Snapsy . Hope you're feeling better. So " diabetes" saw the chink of opportunity in the armour yesterday :)
It happens to us all, but it sounds like you had a great day up until those **** jeans.
Last Tuesday a.m. I got caught out, different weight training regime and bang , 2.1 , jelly babies, cheerios and a cheese sandwich all before 1 in the morning :banghead:. And yes the bed was still damp when I got back in it.
Take care today and give Mr S yesterday's top banana for looking after you.
:):):)

Blimey that was a close call for you @Snapsy but pleased you managed to treat it yourself, hypo's like that are so frightening.

Just some friendly advice if you don't mind, Glucotabs are fine but for a hypo of that severity I would have used Glucogel first or something like Coke, Lucozade or Glucojuice as liquid glucose works so much faster then tabs, in our kitchen cupboard I keep some small party-size cans of full sugar Coke and also have Glucojuice in bedside drawers, pockets and in the glove compartment in my car.

A few years back I had a hypo like that and it was the closest I'd been to not being able to treat one myself, my bg levels must have been dropping like a stone and the sweat was pouring from me but thankfully I had some Coke in the kitchen and was able to drink it followed by some Glucotabs. Horrible experience and it shakes you up for a few days after.

Good advice and much appreciated, @noblehead ! As of last night I now have Glucogel on me as well as Glucotabs - luckily they're on my repeat - I hadn't used any for MONTHS but I'm really glad I was able to get to it this time. It was such a sudden and severe hypo that I should have made a grab for it first.

I'm struck (actually stricken!) that I had become so complacent - normally I see them coming a mile off, and all it takes is one or two tablets and turning down the tap on my pump for a bit.

I'm going to try not to get caught out again! Fortunately I was able to treat it myself, but it was a fairly close call.

For the record I'm wearing those jeans today, having not actually made such a bad job of hypo-ironing as I'd feared! ;)

Have to totally agree with @noblehead and the after affects of a severe hypo. Not just the physical but equally, if not more the emotional/mental turmoil a hypo can create.

On that side of things thankfully @therower I've been feeling fine, much to my own surprise. Woke up very very sleepy but I've had a really good day's work today and my Libre has shown a steady 7.2-ish all day (about 6.5 in blood terms - my bipper reads high) so I am delighted.

Surprised but pleased. Still keeping a close eye on things though!

:)

PS Emotional turmoil is a pretty consistent feature in highly-strung Snapsyland!

@Snapsy . So pleased all is good in Snapsyland. Seems you've had no hangover from yesterday. Experience, resilience and knowledge all help us cope I think.
Enjoy the rest of the day.:):)

hypo-ironing

If there was an Olympic Games for dangerous sports, hypo-ironing would be in it!

"And now competing in the sub 2.5 mmol/l category with hot implement...."

Makes these dudes look like they're playing it safe:

I'm just looking for any excuse to avoid ironing - I hate it more than hypos!

All good except the iron shaped burn in the backside of your jeans..........:hilarious:

Seriously though it's good that you've no ill-effects of last nights hypo today :)
