Along the same line as Kendal Mint Cake, I've started using Thorntons Dairy Butter Tablet, it comes in a 285g bag so I just carry a few squares around in a small bag and leave the rest in the fridge, it is 78g CHO per 100g and has sugar, butter, sweetened condensed milk and glucose syrup in it and no artificial flavours or colours. I happened upon it as I was going hypo outside Thorntons. It is a bit like hard, crumbly fudge and is a bit different to dextrose tablets.
It's dead easy to make. 1 tin condensed milk, 1 bag sugar, 1/2 a packet butter, 1 condensed milk tin measure of water. Boil in a heavy based saucepan through the toffee stage. It sounds odd but the bubbles change when it's ready. Pour into a tray and leave to set.Along the same line as Kendal Mint Cake, I've started using Thorntons Dairy Butter Tablet, it comes in a 285g bag so I just carry a few squares around in a small bag and leave the rest in the fridge, it is 78g CHO per 100g and has sugar, butter, sweetened condensed milk and glucose syrup in it and no artificial flavours or colours. If I can eat olives now.. Then I should be able to start liking dates.. Honest they jyst remind me of fried grubs!! .
Aargh, don't tell me things like that! It's dead easy to make. 1 tin condensed milk, 1 bag sugar, 1/2 a packet butter, 1 condensed milk tin measure of water. LOL, I forgot that dates in England are not quite what they are in Turkey! I was never too keen on those ones in the long packet with the plastic fork thing down the center that we used to only eat at Christmas in my family.
I don't know if you live far out in the country somewhere (I know you make a living gardening), but right now Muslims are fasting and right now their shops have a huge variety of different kinds of dates, and much more delicious than the average. So if you live anywhere near, for example, a Turkish corner shop, or near a mosque with shops nearby just go in an ask for the best dates. Half the time they let you taste them, even in England (that could potentially seriously screw up your blood sugar, though.)
But if you want to try them, now is the time.
Just don't forget to keep stirring or it will burn on the bottomWell thats Sunday sorted for my baking!!
Glad you said about bubbles changing when ready!!
You should try fresh dates, indescribably delicious. Slip off the skins and they are almost crisp, the texture of a good watermelon - aah, but you can't get those things in the West. If you haven't lived in the right part of the world, you won't get to try them.I get mejdool dates in packs from Waitrose... But they still look like big grubs. Even cutting them up for my pecan pie bites makes me cringe......
Bought 2 packs of dares yesrerday for pecan pie bites recipe.. They still look like huge grubs.....chrysalis type things?
Did taste one before putting in to mix and not too bad. Have got 2 in a tupperware container on bedside cabinet now. Hoping if drowsy And in the dark that I will just reach over and take.....
A great Aunty served lettuce with bugs once!! Yet I don't mind lettuce!! LolMy Mum used to like eating dried prunes to ease constipation. Always bought them in foil pack from supermarket. One day she got a prune out of the packet and saw a wiggly white maggot making its way above the surface. Prunes no more, needless to say ......enjoy yr dates PSML........
I used salted butter as I don't have salt as an everyday item.
The upside of coming of pump is that I could use induction hob and stand over it to stir!! Brilliant.
(The downside-the chef has to taste, so I've had to bolus for licking the saucepan and stirrers!!)
Got to say @lessci that is the simplest, best, natural hypo stopper ever!!!
Absolutely made my day. Thank you so much.
(Had so much it filled my tray and also the bottom of a plastic "tupperware' bowl as well. Much cheaper and delicious compared to lucozade, gluco tabs etc...
Thank you for taking the time to type out recipe and instructions. So very much appreciated....
